INJURIES

Demoted after brutal start The Rockies optioned Blalock to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.
Impact Unsurprisingly, Blalock received a demotion after he was lit up for 12 earned runs on 13 hits and two walks over just 3.2 innings in his start during Saturday's 21-0 loss to the Padres. Though the Rockies still have an opening in the rotation with Ryan Feltner (back) seemingly not on track to return from the injured list during the upcoming week, Triple-A righty Tanner Gordon could be the next man up to step in as the big club's fifth starter after Blalock failed to get the job done.

Bombarded by Padres Blalock (0-2) took the loss against San Diego on Saturday, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 3.2 innings.
Impact Blalock fell behind quickly, giving up five runs in the first frame. Things didn't get much better for him the rest of the way, as the Padres added a run in each of the second and third innings before tacking on eight more -- five of which were charged to Blalock -- in the fourth. The right-hander was clobbered for five extra-base hits (three homers and two doubles) and saw his ERA rise from an already-awful 8.03 to a hideous 12.94. He was promoted back up to the majors to join Colorado's rotation when Ryan Feltner (back) landed on the injured list May 2, but Blalock may not be long for the big-league squad given his results so far.

Yields three runs in no-decision Blalock did not factor into the decision in Saturday's game against the Giants, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings.
Impact Blalock registered only nine first-pitch strikes and six whiffs on 75 pitches (47 strikes), but he limited the Giants to one run through his first five innings. He was tagged for another run after being lifted in the sixth frame and was in line for the win, but that didn't come to fruition after Matt Chapman knocked a go-ahead grand slam off Jake Bird. Blalock will be in the Rockies' rotation for as long as Ryan Feltner (back) is on the 15-day injured list, and the former is lined up to face the Padres at home next weekend.

Returning to majors The Rockies recalled Blalock from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday.
Impact Blalock has appeared in three games (one start) for the Rockies this season, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out three over seven innings. He was optioned to Triple-A on Monday, but he'll return to the majors to give the Rockies another arm in the rotation after Ryan Feltner (back) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.
MAY 2 • ROTOWIRE
Back to Triple-A The Rockies optioned Blalock to Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday.
Impact After Ryan Feltner was pushed back a day in the pitching schedule due to a minor back issue, Blalock was called up from Triple-A to make a spot start in Sunday's game against the Reds. He took the loss while serving up six runs ons seven hits and two walks over four frames, but Blalock was at least able to eat some innings and spare a taxed bullpen from more overuse. The Rockies will swap him off the active roster ahead of Monday's game against Atlanta in favor of a fresh relief arm in right-hander Juan Mejia, who was recalled from Triple-A.

Lodolo tosses 7 strong innings as the Reds top the Rockies 8-1

Walloped in loss Blalock (0-1) took the loss Sunday against the Reds, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over four-plus innings. He struck out one.
Impact Blalock took one for the team in this 80-pitch outing, as he was recalled for this start to provide any extra day's rest for the rotation. The Reds jumped on the Colorado right-hander out the gate, cracking four hits in a three-run first inning. Blalock was mercifully lifted in the fifth frame after allowing the first three batters to reach, but reliever Jimmy Herget subsequently allowed all those runners to score. Given that this appears to have been a spot start, Blalock will likely be shuttled back to the minors.

Recalled, starting Sunday The Rockies recalled Blalock from Triple-A Albuquerque, and he'll start against the Reds on Sunday.
Impact Blalock competed for the No. 5 starting spot in the Rockies' rotation during spring training, and while he made the Opening Day roster, the 24-year-old right-hander's two outings came from out of the bullpen. Blalock has started in three games in Triple-A this season and will give the Rockies' rotation an extra day of rest by starting in Sunday's series finale. Blalock started in six games for Colorado in 2024, posting a 1-3 record with a 6.07 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 20:19 K:BB across 29.2 innings.

Heads to Triple-A The Rockies optioned Blalock to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.
Impact With Austin Gomber (shoulder) on the shelf to begin the season, Blalock had headed into Opening Day as the Rockies' presumptive No. 5 starter. However, off days early on in the team's schedule allowed the Rockies to get by with a four-man rotation for the first week and a half of the season, and Blalock ended up making a pair of relief appearances over the team's first eight games. The Rockies will break in a No. 5 starter for Sunday's game against the Athletics, but it won't be Blalock who fills the opening. Instead, he'll head to Triple-A to clear room on the active roster for prized pitching prospect Chase Dollander, who will draw the start Sunday. Blalock will likely continue to get stretched out as a starter at Albuquerque after covering two innings Saturday in his most recent relief appearance.
APRIL 6 • ROTOWIRE
Chance for roster spot Blalock could make Colorado's Opening Day roster as a starter or long reliever, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Impact Blalock made his big-league debut with the Brewers and Rockies in 2024, throwing 30.2 innings primarily as a starter. He struggled to a 5.87 ERA and 1.79 WHIP paired with a 20:20 K:BB. However, Blalock has impressed this spring, allowing only two earned runs with a 10:1 K:BB across nine frames. Saunders notes that Blalock's most likely role is in long relief, though he'd be an option for the rotation if Austin Gomber (shoulder) remains sidelined.

Returns to Triple-A The Rockies optioned Blalock to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.
Impact With Cal Quantrill (tricep) returning from the injured list to start Sunday's game against the Cubs and Antonio Senzatela (elbow) set to return from the IL to start Monday versus the Diamondbacks, the Rockies no longer had room in the rotation for Blalock. The right-hander made six starts for Colorado following his Aug. 12 call-up from Triple-A, logging a 1-3 record with a 6.07 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 20:19 K:BB in 29.2 innings.

Drops third straight Blalock (1-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Tigers, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and five walks over four innings. He struck out four.
Impact Blalock gave up a lead-off homer to Parker Meadows in the first inning before he was tagged for another four runs in the second, with three scoring on a Riley Greene bases-loaded triple. It's the third straight loss for the 23-year-old Blalock -- he's allowed 14 earned runs in just 13 innings in that span while issuing 11 walks in his last two starts (nine innings). Overall, Blalock sports a 5.87 ERA with a 1.79 WHIP and 20:19 K:BB through his first 29.2 big-league innings. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend against the Cubs at home.
SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Done in by first inning Wednesday Blalock (1-2) took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits and six walks while striking out two batters over five innings.
Impact All of the runs Blalock allowed came with two outs in the first inning, as Atlanta scored four runs in a span of four batters on a pair of doubles, a walk and a Jarred Kelenic homer. Though Blalock didn't allow any runs in the remainder of his five frames, he also walked a batter in each of those innings and finished with a career-worst six free passes. The rookie right-hander yielded a respectable six runs over 16.2 frames over his first three starts, but in his subsequent two outings he's given up 11 runs (10 earned) in nine frames.
