Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks meet in game 2 of series

The Chicago Cubs meet the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 1-0 series lead
MARCH 28 • Associated Press
Placed on 10-day injured list The Diamondbacks placed Alexander on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a right oblique strain, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.comreports.
Impact Alexander suffered the injury in late February and only just resumed baseball activities last week. He isn't a given to join the major-league roster once he's physically ready to do so.
MARCH 27 • ROTOWIRE
Begins baseball activity Alexander (oblique) has started baseball activities, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.
Impact The activities include throwing and hitting off a tee. Alexander suffered a right-oblique strain at the end of February and has been held out of Cactus League action since then.

Diamondbacks shortstop Blaze Alexander's status for opening day in doubt due to oblique strain

Arizona Diamondbacks utility player Blaze Alexander will miss several weeks with a strained right oblique, potentially putting his status for opening day in doubt
FEBRUARY 28 • Associated Press
Out with oblique strain Manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Alexander suffered a Grade 1 right oblique strain and will be unavailable for Opening Day, Jack Sommers of SI.com reports.
Impact It's unclear when exactly Alexander sustained the injury, but his last appearance in a Cactus League game came Monday versus the Guardians. The 25-year-old was fighting to earn a roster spot as a utility infielder but now appears set to begin the campaign on the injured list.
FEBRUARY 28 • ROTOWIRE
Makes spring debut Alexander started at second base and went 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored in Saturday's spring game against the Rockies.
Impact Alexander is expected to play multiple infield positions in a quest to claim a utility role on the Opening Day roster. It's the same role Kevin Newman held last season, but he signed with the Angels in the offseason. The questions surrounding Alexander in first exposure to MLB in 2024 was his defense and the downturn at the plate after a strong April. His primary competition for a roster spot are Garrett Hampson and Ildemaro Vargas.
FEBRUARY 23 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Diamondbacks optioned Alexander to Triple-A Reno, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Impact He's clearing out to make room on the roster for Luis Guillorme, who was signed Tuesday. Alexander's latest stint in the majors lasted less than a week and he went hitless in 10 plate appearances.

AUGUST 15, 2024 • AZCENTRAL.COM
Rejoins major-league roster The Diamondbacks recalled Alexander from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
Impact Alexander will provide some infield depth while Ketel Marte (ankle) is banged up. The rookie has slashed .297/.374/.446 versus left-handed pitching, so if he gets some starts they're likely to come against southpaws.
AUGUST 14, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Diamondbacks optioned Alexander to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday
Impact With Gabriel Moreno (thumb) and Alek Thomas (hamstring) returning from the injured list Tuesday, Alexander and Tucker Barnhart will both be pushed back to the minors. In his first season in the big leagues, Alexander has slashed .259/.328/.361 with three homers and 21 RBI across 175 plate appearances. Should the Diamondbacks run into any problems with their infield depth, it's likely the 25-year-old would be one of the first choices for a return to Arizona.

Pfaadt pitches 6 effective innings and Alexander gets a key hit as the Diamondbacks beat the A's 5-1

Larger role at hot corner Alexander is starting at third base Wednesday against the Angels, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said the utility infielder will see more opportunities at the position goin...
Impact Eugenio Suarez has worked as Arizona's everyday third baseman through the first two-plus months of the campaign, but he's struggled to a .575 OPS in 262 plate appearances. Wednesday's start is just Alexander's third at the hot corner this season, and his .279/.345/.403 slash line could be enough to seize a regular role. Lovullo wasn't clear how playing time will be split, but Suarez seems likely to still see at least semi-regular action.
JUNE 12, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Fading into reserve role Alexander is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds.
Impact Alexander is on the bench for a third straight game, with all three absences coming against right-handed pitching. The rookie has a lowly .544 OPS over his past nine games and has gotten poor reviews for his work in the field, so he looks like he'll remain in a backup role at shortstop behind Kevin Newman until Geraldo Perdomo (knee) is back from the injured list.
MAY 8, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Sitting after three straight starts Alexander is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.
Impact Alexander had started each of the previous three games at shortstop, going 1-for-9 with one walk. He'll give way to Kevin Newman for the series finale, but the playing time at shortstop will likely tilt in Alexander's direction until Geraldo Perdomo (knee) is ready to return from the injured list.
MAY 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Not in Tuesday's lineup Alexander is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Dodgers.
Impact Alexander has now started at shortstop just twice over the last eight games (although he did make one other start at designated hitter during that span). Kevin Newman will again be at shortstop Tuesday.
APRIL 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Logs hit in return Alexander started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact Alexander returned to the lineup after missing two games due to a hamstring. He was moved up to second in the order, as a couple of Arizona regulars were getting a breather. Alexander also committed his fourth throwing error of the season (minus-7 outs above average), although the fielding issues haven't impacted his playing time or offense. Alexander is hitting .316/.371/.915 with four doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI over 62 plate appearances.
APRIL 25, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Regular role could await Alexander is expected to see regular starts at shortstop with Geraldo Perdomo (knee) expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's game in Atlanta, Nick Piecor...
Impact According to Piecoro, Perdomo tore the meniscus in his right knee Wednesday and needs surgery, which will likely keep him out for at least one month. The righty-hitting Alexander had already been a mainstay in the lineup versus left-handed pitching early on in the season, but the rookie should get the opportunity to face same-handed pitching more frequently while Perdomo is on the mend. Along with Alexander, utility men Jace Peterson and Kevin Newman -- the latter of whom is expected to be called up from Triple-A Reno -- will be candidates for added reps at shortstop. Alexander posted an .865 OPS with eight home runs and two stolen bases over 73 games at Reno last season and has gotten off to a strong start in the big leagues, slashing .278/.350/.444 through his first 20 plate appearances.
APRIL 7, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Enters late at short Alexander entered Friday's loss to Atlanta as a pinch hitter and stayed in the game to play shortstop. He went 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts and made a fielding error.
Impact Alexander's fielding error led to an unearned run as part of Atlanta's two-run ninth inning that tied the game, setting up the loss in the extra frame. With primary shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee) unavailable, the lefty-hitting Jace Peterson started against a righty and was replaced by Alexander against a lefty. That appears to be the pattern going forward for as long as Perdomo is sidelined. An expected MRI on Saturday should present a clearer indication of Perdomo's status. With a left-hander on the bump Saturday for Atlanta, Alexander could start.

Alexander makes opening day squad. Montgomery not on roster, so D-Backs can't make qualifying offer

Blaze Alexander is on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ opening day roster
MARCH 28, 2024 • Associated Press
Makes case for roster Alexander started at designated hitter and went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's spring game against Texas.
Impact Alexander is still hanging around major-league camp and can't be ruled out of a spot on the Opening Day roster. There isn't an everyday home for the prospect, but the infielder is batting .400 with five extra-base hits and three stolen bases through 18 Cactus League games. If he can handle multiple positions and the Diamondbacks are fine with him not getting regular at-bats, Alexander could be added to the roster. He's appeared in games at second base (12), third base (three), designated hitter (two) and shortstop (one).
MARCH 17, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Doing what's asked of him Alexander started at designated hitter and went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base in Saturday's spring game against Cincinnati.
Impact Alexander has responded to a spring training challenge from Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who gave the shortstop areas on which to focus in camp, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. "Show us that you're versatile and can play more than one position. Control the at-bats, control the zone, don't worry about hitting home runs, [focus on] gap-to-gap," the manager said at the start of camp. Alexander has played shortstop, second base and third base in Cactus League action, hit to all fields, and compiled a 1.035 OPS over 29 plate appearances. Arizona general manager Mike Hazen, who was effusive about the prospect's spring performance, prefers that Alexander get regular at-bats in the minors, but the 24-year-old infielder could force decision-makers to rethink their plans.

Activated off minor-league IL Alexander (thumb) was activated from the minor-league injured list Tuesday at Triple-A Reno, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports.
Impact Alexander suffered a fractured right thumb on a hit-by-pitch back in mid-April and wound up missing exactly two months of minor-league action. The 24-year-old infielder had put up a sensational .458/.618/.792 batting line through 34 plate appearances this season at the Triple-A level prior to the lengthy IL stint.
JUNE 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Banged up at Triple-A Triple-A Reno placed Alexander on the 7-day injured list April 14 with a broken right thumb, Michael McDermott of SI.com reports.
Impact Alexander sustained the injury in an April 13 game, when he was hit by a pitch in the bill of the helmet before the ball ricocheted into his thumb. The shortstop is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks with the broken thumb. The injury is a tough break for the 23-year-old, who was making a strong early case for a promotion to the big leagues by submitting a 1.410 OPS and 8:6 BB:K through his first nine games with Reno.
APRIL 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A level Alexander was optioned Friday to Triple-A Reno.
Impact Alexander was one of seven players in this round of cuts from the major-league side of Diamondbacks camp. The 23-year-old infielder could climb to the majors at some point during the 2023 campaign after slashing .301/.389/.540 with 20 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 98 minor-league games last season. He finished up at Reno.
