Twins place Ober on injured list with right elbow inflammation

Shelved with elbow inflammation
The Twins placed Ober on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right elbow inflammation.
Impact
Ober had been on a roll over a stretch of seven starts prior to Saturday, going 4-2 with a 3.19 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 29:12 K:BB in 42.1 innings during that span. That impressive run came to a screeching halt, however, as Ober was lit up for eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits -- including three home runs -- and one walk in 4.2 innings in a loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday. The elbow issue may have played a factor in Ober's poor command, and the right-hander will now be on the shelf through at least mid-June while he recovers from the injury. Minnesota called up right-hander Mike Paredes from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move, and if he isn't needed in relief over the next few days, he could be a candidate to replace Ober in the rotation the next time the Twins need a fifth starter.

Ambushed in loss
Ober (6-3) took the loss against the Pirates on Saturday, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and one walk with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
Impact
Ober allowed 12 hard-hit balls and was mostly undone by a six-run second inning that included two of the three homers he surrendered. The 30-year-old's complete-game shutout now looks like the outlier in an otherwise rough May, as he yielded 19 earned runs across his other four outings during the month. He now owns a 4.59 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 46:18 K:BB over 66.2 innings this season and lines up for a home matchup against the Royals next week.

Mixed results in win
Ober (6-2) earned the win against the Red Sox on Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts over five innings.
Impact
Ober filled the zone with 59 strikes on 82 pitches, but three of the four runs he surrendered came via two homers. The 30-year-old has now yielded seven earned runs across 10 innings since throwing a complete-game shutout May 12, though he was still able to log at least five frames for the ninth straight outing. He'll carry a 3.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 43:17 K:BB across 62 innings this season into a road matchup against the Pirates.

Secures fifth win
Ober (5-2) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over five innings to earn the win over the Brewers on Sunday.
Impact
Ober wasn't nearly as dominant as in his last start, which was a complete-game shutout versus the Marlins on Tuesday. He threw 46 of 77 pitches for strikes and was tagged for home runs by Garrett Mitchell and Christian Yelich, accounting for two of the three runs on the right-hander's line. Ober has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last six outings, but it's fair that he wasn't quite as sharp against a tough opponent. He's at a 3.63 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 40:17 K:BB through 57 innings over 10 starts this season. Ober's next start is projected to be on the road in Boston.

Goes distance in dominant win
Ober (4-2) earned the win over Miami on Tuesday, allowing two hits and striking out seven batters without issuing a walk over nine scoreless innings.
Impact
Ober was in complete control throughout Tuesday's outing, limiting the Marlins to just two baserunners on a pair of singles. He retired the final 16 batters he faced and needed only 89 pitches to complete his first career shutout. It was also just the third complete game of Ober's six-year MLB tenure. After struggling to a career-worst 5.10 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 27 starts last season, the right-hander has pitched much better so far in 2026. He has a 3.46 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 39:15 K:BB across 52 innings spanning nine starts.

Tagged with loss Wednesday
Ober (3-2) was tagged wth the loss Wednesday against the Nationals after allowing five runs on six hits and two walks across five innings. He struck out three.
Impact
Ober tossed 52 of his 82 pitches for strikes, and overall, this was a step in the wrong direction for the right-hander -- he was coming off three straight outings in which he'd given up two or fewer earned runs while pitching at least six innings each time. Ober, who has a 4.19 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across eight starts and 43 innings this season, is scheduled to make his next start against the Marlins at home next week.

Improves to 3-1
Ober (3-1) earned the win over Toronto on Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters over six innings.
Impact
Ober yielded just one extra-base hit -- a fourth-inning solo homer by Dalton Varsho. While he was far from overpowering with nine whiffs and just two punchouts, Ober got the job done en route to his third straight quality start. The right-hander recorded a 5.49 ERA through his first four outings this season, but during the aforementioned three-game stretch, he's yielded just three earned runs over 18.1 frames to bring that ERA down to 3.55. Ober has been all over the place in terms of punchouts this season -- he's registered as many as 10 and as few as one in an outing -- and his overall 6.9 K/9 isn't going to raise any eyebrows, but his overall numbers have indicated a bounce-back campaign after he posted a career-worst 5.10 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 146.1 frames last year.

Posts quality start in first loss
Ober (2-1) took the loss against the Rays on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six innings.
Impact
Ober allowed a two-run homer in the fourth inning, but the Twins were unable to muster any offense before he departed at 83 pitches. The 30-year-old generated just three whiffs but limited the Rays to three hard-hit balls and has now completed six or more innings in three straight outings, including back-to-back quality starts. He'll carry a 3.94 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 27:11 K:BB across 32 innings into a home matchup against the Blue Jays next week.

Strikes out 10 in no-decision
Ober did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 7-4 extra-inning loss to the Reds, allowing one unearned run on three hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
Impact
It was an unusual outing, as Ober set season highs in both walks (four) and strikeouts (10) while earning his first quality start of the year. He generated 14 whiffs on 102 pitches and was in line for his third straight victory before the Reds rallied to take the lead in the top of the ninth. The 30-year-old will carry a 4.15 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB across 26 innings into a road matchup against the Rays next weekend.
