Struggles mightily Sunday Warren (2-2) allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while failing to record an out to take the loss and the blown save Sunday against the Giants.

Impact Warren had been effective over his last four outings, as he tossed 4.2 scoreless innings to earn two saves and a hold during that time. Tyler Mahle carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Sunday, but Warren surrendered the lead in the top of the eighth inning and was charged with his third blown save of the year. While the right-hander had earned more closing duties recently, he's now converted just three of six save chances this season, and he's posted a 7.27 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 17.1 innings over 19 appearances in 2022. Tony Santillan and Alexis Diaz could see more ninth-inning work following Warren's rough outing.

The Reds followed with two runs in the bottom of the frame, and Warren returned for the ninth and protected the four-run lead. The 29-year-old has allowed opponents to score in only one of his past nine appearances, and he's notched two saves and a hold with a 1.74 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB across 10.1 innings during that stretch.

Impact Tony Santillan, who earned the save for Cincinnati on Opening Day, got the final out of the seventh inning before pitching the eighth. Sunday's appearance was the first of the regular season for Warren, who emerged last year to become one of manager David Bell's most trusted bullpen options. This looks like it may be a full-blown committee, with Warren and Santillan at its head, at least until Lucas Sims (elbow) returns.

Listed as closer candidate Warren was named by manager David Bell as one of a large number of closer candidates Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact Warren looked like one of the top options in the absence of Lucas Sims (elbow), and that's now been confirmed by his manager. Warren's 1.29 ERA and 41.5 percent strikeout rate last season certainly look like closer material, though that came in just 21 innings. It's possible the Reds go with a veteran instead, with Luis Cessa, Hunter Strickland and Justin Wilson all reportedly in the mix.

Warren hasn't been officially named the closer in his absence, but he's a logical choice for the role after producing a remarkable 1.29 ERA and 41.5 percent strikeout rate in 21 innings last season. Other candidates include Luis Cessa and Hunter Strickland, both of whom have considerably more MLB experience but nowhere near the same strikeout numbers.
