INJURIES

Returns to big club Toronto recalled Kay from its alternate training site Sunday.
Impact Kay was added to the 26-man active roster as a replacement for long reliever Tommy Milone (shoulder), who was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Like Milone, Kay is a left-handed option capable of offering some length out of the bullpen. Toronto has an opening in the rotation that will need to be filled Tuesday in Oakland, and Kay could be a candidate to make a spot start if he isn't needed in relief Sunday against Atlanta or in Monday's series opener versus the Athletics.

Optioned to alternate site Kay was optioned to Toronto's alternate training site Friday.
Impact Kay made a single start during his time with the team, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings of work. He hasn't pitched in over a week. Tyler Chatwood (triceps) was activated in a corresponding move.

Not starting Wednesday Kay won't start Wednesday against the Red Sox but could still work as a bulk reliever, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact The 26-year-old lined up to start Wednesday's contest, but Trent Thornton will instead work as an opener. Kay and Tommy Milone are the primary candidates to follow as the primary pitcher, but manager Charlie Montoyo neglected to specify which pitcher is likely to work behind Thornton.

Shelled in loss Kay (0-1) allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out three over 3.1 innings of work in a loss to the Royals on Thursday.
Impact The lefty was scheduled to start on short notice as the Blue Jays are dealing with a multitude of injuries within their rotation. The 26-year-old threw only 36 of his 56 pitches for strikes and made it tough to justify keeping him in the starting rotation. If the Blue Jays opt to give Kay another chance at starting, his next chance to take the rubber will be on Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Starting Thursday's game Kay has been recalled by the Blue Jays to start Thursday's game against the Royals, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.
Impact Kay was sent to the Blue Jays' alternate training site to begin the regular season, but he'll make his season debut Thursday after Ross Stripling (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list. The southpaw made 13 relief appearances for Toronto last year and posted a 5.14 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in 21 innings. Since the Blue Jays have two scheduled off days next week, it's not yet clear whether Kay will remain in the rotation after starting Thursday's game.

Sent to alternate site The Blue Jays optioned Kay (lower leg) to their alternate training site Thursday.
Impact Kay exited his final Grapefruit League appearance Saturday with a lower right leg contusion, but he said he was fine after the appearance. Rather than any concern about Kay's health, Toronto excluded the southpaw from its Opening Day roster because he was on the losing end of a job battle with T.J. Zeuch, who is expected to temporarily fill in as the team's No. 5 starter while Robbie Ray (elbow) is on the mend.
