Impact After missing all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last March, Felipe has struggled to regain effectiveness since being cleared for game action in mid-May. He struggled mightily over his six-appearance rehab assignment at Single-A Inland Empire (7.71 ERA, 3.10 WHIP, 4:7 K:BB in 4.2 innings), and he's continued to lack both command and control since reporting to Salt Lake. Since he's a 28-year-old reliever on a minor-league deal, the Angels don't have much of an investment in Felipe and could end up cutting him if he doesn't turn his performance around soon.

Impact Felipe presumably suffered the injury Monday in St. Louis when he was tagged with the loss after giving up three earned runs in one-third of an inning. It's unclear exactly how long the right-hander will be sidelined, but the fact it's an elbow injury could put his season in jeopardy.

Felipe was subsequently charged with three runs and the loss when all of those runners crossed the plate after his exit, his first big-league defeat in 14 appearances. Impact Felipe was designated for assignment by the Padres on Sunday to clear a spot on their 40-man roster, and he finds a new home a few days later. The right-hander has struggled in 2023 with a 6.20 ERA and 1.82 WHIP with Triple-A El Paso, but he did impress in 2022 with 14 saves with 84 strikeouts over 62 innings in the minors, and Oakland will hope he can find that form again in the second half of 2023.

Impact After joining the Padres in January 2022 as a minor-league free agent, Felipe earned a spot on the 40-man roster heading into the 2023 campaign after he turned in a 3.63 ERA while striking out 84 batters and recording 14 saves across 62 innings between Triple-A El Paso and Double-A San Antonio. The 25-year-old right-hander had taken a major step back in 2023, however, as he pitched to a 6.20 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 39:18 K:BB in 24.2 innings with El Paso before the Padres dropped him from the 40-man roster. He'll now be exposed to waivers, but if he goes unclaimed, Felipe will remain in the organization and continue to work out of the El Paso bullpen.
