Headed for free agency Chafin plans to decline his $6.5 million player option for 2023 ahead of next week's deadline, Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact Chafin won't have to formally submit a decision regarding whether or not to exercise 2023 option until five days after the end of the World Series, but the 32-year-old has already decided to try his luck on the open market following an impressive season in Detroit. The veteran lefty made 64 appearances for the Tigers, notching two wins, three saves and 19 holds while submitting a 2.83 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 15.9 K-BB% across 57.1 innings. No matter where he ultimately lands in 2023, Chafin is unlikely to get a look as a full-time closer, but he should be a key part of his next team's late-inning mix.

Notches second save in three days Chafin earned the save against Seattle on Monday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters over one inning.

Impact Chafin was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the ninth frame and worked around a two-out single and stolen base to get the job done. He threw nine of 15 pitches for strikes and racked up multiple punchouts for his third straight outing. Chafin has picked up two saves in the past three days, with Gregory Soto recording a save of his own in between. Soto is clearly still the Tigers' primary closer, but Chafin has posted consecutive strong campaigns in a high-leverage role.

Impact Chafin had a weird outing, as he struck out the first three batters he faced in the eighth inning. However, the final strikeout got away from catcher Eric Haase, going down as a wild pitch and allowing Luke Maile to reach first base. Chafin then allowed a single and a double before getting the hook. Alex Lange came on and allowed both inherited runners to score, which made Chafin's line look pretty rough for a guy who struck out the side. The lefty still has a solid 3.18 ERA and has been a good relief option for the Tigers this season.
