INJURIES

Behind the quirks of Tigers pitcher Andrew Chafin, there's a lot to learn The list of Andrew Chafin's country-style quirks is never-ending. But in all the hilarity, there's also a lesson or two.
JUNE 1 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Saddled with first loss Chafin (0-1) allowed a run on two hits and a walk while retiring just one batter to take the loss Monday against the Twins.
Impact Coming on in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied 4-4, Chafin walked leadoff hitter Max Kepler. He then allowed a single to pinch-hitter Kyle Garlick that put runners on the corners, and an infield hit by Gio Urshela with one out gave the Twins a walkoff win. Chafin had gone four straight appearances without allowing a run, and the lefty still owns a tidy 2.89 ERA despite the hiccup, so he should remain a key relief option in Detroit.

Kepler hits slam, Urshela and Twins walk off Tigers 5-4

Max Kepler hit an early grand slam, and Gio Urshela’s infield single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers

Earns third hold Chafin pitched a clean eighth inning with two strikeouts to earn a hold in Saturday's win over the Orioles.
Impact Despite some hiccups lately, Gregory Soto saw the save opportunity Saturday, and he was able to shut the door on Baltimore. Chafin has pitched pretty well with a 2.57 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 10 strikeouts across seven innings this season, which has earned him some trust in a setup role. Soto should stick as the closer for now, though Chafin could be an option at some point, along with Michael Fulmer and Will Vest.
MAY 15 • ROTOWIRE
Makes season debut Wednesday Chafin allowed one run on two hits across an inning of relief in Wednesday's loss to the Twins. He struck out one.
Impact Chafin, who suffered a groin injury in spring training, was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday but didn't enter the game. He looked rusty in his season debut Wednesday, as he allowed back-to-back doubles to start the inning, though he escaped with only the one run allowed. Despite the tough outing, Chafin should settle into a valuable bullpen role as the team's top lefty reliever outside of closer Gregory Soto.

APRIL 26 • FREEP.COM
Activated from IL Chafin was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday.
Impact The lefty reliever signed with the Tigers this offseason, but he suffered a groin injury during spring training, which has delayed his 2022 debut. Chafin is now ready to go and will look to build off of his career year from 2021, where he produced a 1.83 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over 68.2 innings with the Cubs and Athletics. He'll likely operate as a set-up man to Gregory Soto, pitching in high-leverage situations this season.
APRIL 26 • ROTOWIRE
Looks good in Triple-A appearance Chafin made the second appearance of his minor-league rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Toledo, tossing a 1-2-3 inning and striking out two in the nine-pitch outing.
Impact On the heels of the sharp rehab appearance, Chafin looks as though he could be ready to return from the 10-day injured list when the Tigers return to action Tuesday in Minnesota. The Tigers foreshadowed Chafin's likely activation by optioning reliever Rony Garcia to Toledo after Sunday's loss to the Rockies, which opens up a spot on the 28-man roster.
APRIL 24 • ROTOWIRE
Rehab moves to Triple-A Chafin (groin) will continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo starting Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact A strained left groin has so far prevented Chafin from making his Tigers debut, but he appears to be closing in on a return from the injured list. He threw a scoreless rehab inning for Single-A Lakeland on Thursday and could return to the Tigers when they travel to take on the Twins on Tuesday.
APRIL 22 • ROTOWIRE
Rehab outing scheduled Chafin (groin) will make a rehab appearance for Low-A Lakeland on Thursday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact Chafin missed the start of the season with a groin strain, but he's making progress and closing in on a return. If his outing Thursday goes well, he'll move up to Triple-A Toledo for two more rehab appearances. That puts his potential return date sometime in the middle of next week.
APRIL 19 • ROTOWIRE
Throws another bullpen Chafin (groin) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Friday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Impact Although Chafin didn't feel completely comfortable following Monday's bullpen session, he was able to throw once again several days later. He'll toss a live BP session in the coming days before making a rehab appearance at Low-A Lakeland. Chafin will then require at least one rehab outing at Triple-A Toledo, so he won't be able to rejoin the major-league club during the upcoming series against the Yankees.
APRIL 16 • ROTOWIRE
Throws bullpen, still no timetable Chafin (groin) didn't feel completely comfortable throwing his bullpen session Monday, leaving him without a set rehab outing date, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact Chafin was brought in this summer to operate as a significant piece of the Tigers' bullpen, but he's been hindered by this groin issue to open the season, leaving the team thin with options late in games. It seems as if his season debut will likely come in late April, potentially even early May.
APRIL 12 • ROTOWIRE
Wily Peralta may join Detroit Tigers this week; Andrew Chafin trending in right direction Detroit Tigers reliever Wily Peralta pitched two scoreless innings Saturday for Low-A Lakeland, throwing 12 of 19 pitches for strikes.
APRIL 10 • FREEP.COM
Feeling healthier Chafin (groin) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Impact Chafin suffered a groin strain late in spring training, though he is reportedly feeling much healthier. He may need to go on a rehab outing prior to being activated given that he was only able to throw two exhibition innings before suffering the injury.
APRIL 10 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on injured list Chafin (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact Chafin was diagnosed with a left groin strain late in spring training, and he'll officially land on the IL to begin the regular season. The move is retroactive to April 4, but it's not yet clear when the southpaw will be able to make his 2022 debut.
APRIL 6 • ROTOWIRE
Won't be ready for Opening Day Manager A.J. Hinch said Saturday that Chafin (groin) will begin the regular season on the injured list, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact Chafin had been dealing with groin tightness for the last few days, and he won't have enough time to build up ahead of the regular season. The southpaw will be eligible to be placed on the 10-day injured list rather than the 15-day IL, but it's not yet clear when he'll be able to make his 2022 debut.
APRIL 2 • ROTOWIRE
Opening Day in doubt Chafin's availability for Opening Day is in question as he continues to receive treatment for groin tightness, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact Chafin was scratched from a scheduled Grapefruit League appearance Wednesday, and time is getting tight for him to get back on track and avoid a trip to the injured list. The Tigers brought Jacob Barnes back from minor-league camp Friday, which seems to be a clear sign that they're worried Chafin won't break camp with the team.
APRIL 1 • ROTOWIRE
Iffy as opener approaches Tigers manager AJ Hinch said Thursday that Chafin will be sidelined for "at least a couple of days" due to the groin injury that prevented him from pitching in Wednesday's game aga...
Impact Chafin didn't participate in the team warmup ahead of Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, as he instead met with the training staff to receive treatment for the injury that has been described as "groin tightness." Hinch wasn't ready to speculate what the injury might mean for Chafin's status for Opening Day, but the lefty reliever will presumably need to throw a bullpen session without incident at some point within the next week to avoid a stint on the injured list to begin the season.
MARCH 31 • ROTOWIRE
Experiencing groin tightness The Tigers scratched Chafin from his scheduled relief appearance in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays due to groin tightness, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact Detroit is hopeful that after a couple days of rest, Chafin will be ready to take the mound when his next planned pitching appearance comes over the weekend. After inking a two-year, $13 million deal with Detroit earlier this month, Chafin is expected to serve as the team's top lefty setup man behind closer Gregory Soto.

Inks two-year deal with Tigers Chafin signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Tigers on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Impact Chafin put together the best season of his career while pitching for the Cubs and Athletics last year, as he converted five of eight save opportunities with 22 holds while posting a 1.83 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 68.2 innings across 71 appearances. He'll be rewarded with a pay raise in Detroit and should factor into the team's late-inning mix, even though Gregory Soto has already been named the Tigers' closer heading into the season.
