Moves to IL
The Orioles placed Suarez on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right shoulder inflammation.
Impact
Baltimore called up right-hander Matt Bowman from Triple-A Norfolk to join the bullpen as a replacement for Suarez, who displayed diminished his velocity in his season debut Friday, when he was charged with two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two across 2.2 innings in a 8-2 loss to the Blue Jays. Suarez will be eligible for activation as soon as April 13.

Relief role on tap
GM Mike Elias announced Sunday that Suarez will begin the season working out of the bullpen, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Impact
Cade Povich won the battle to be Baltimore's No. 5 starter, so Suarez will open the campaign in relief. The right-hander should again work as a swing man in 2025 but may have a difficult time replicating the 24 regular-season starts he made last season. Suarez made eight relief appearances in addition to those starts and finished the regular season with a 3.70 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 108:43 K:BB across 133.2 innings.

Competing to start year in rotation
Suarez picked up the win in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers after allowing one run on four hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out four.
Impact
Suarez is battling with Cade Povich for Baltimore's final rotation spot to begin the year in Grayson Rodriguez's (elbow) stead, and Sunday's effort should help his case of beginning 2025 as a starter. After giving up seven runs across 4.1 innings in exhibition play during February, Suarez has bounced back with a 2.84 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 12.2 frames in March. It's possible the veteran right-hander gets one more spring start before the Orioles make a final decision between Suarez and Povich.

Considered sixth starter
Manager Brandon Hyde said Saturday that Suarez is currently positioned as Baltimore's No. 6 starting pitcher, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The right-hander is a strong bet to make the Opening Day roster since he's out of minor-league options, but he could be headed to the bullpen rather than the starting rotation. The Orioles have Zach Eflin, Grayson Rodriguez, Charlie Morton, Dean Kremer and Tomoyuki Sugano poised to begin the campaign as their five-man unit, with Cade Povich coming in at the No. 7 spot. Suarez started in 24 of his 32 regular-season appearances last season and is on track to work as a swingman again in 2025.

ROTOWIRE
Starting spring opener
Suarez is scheduled to start Saturday's Grapefruit League opener against the Pirates.
Impact
Suarez made 24 starts among his 32 appearances last season, pitching to a respectable 3.70 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 133.2 total innings for Baltimore. He struggled to a 6.20 ERA in September and was left off the wild-card roster, but the 35-year-old righty will have a chance to return to the rotation mix in his second season back in the majors following an extended stint overseas between Japan and Korea. While lacking in terms of strikeouts, Suarez will be a streaming candidate against lesser opponents if he's making regular starts for the Orioles, which doesn't seem far fetched given the question marks on the starting staff.

ROTOWIRE
Not part of wild-card roster
Suarez is not on the Orioles' American League Wild Card Series roster.
Impact
Suarez is a candidate to potentially get a start in the ALDS, should the Orioles advance, but the club will need just a max of three starters during the wild-card series. Matt Bowman was also left off the Orioles' roster, with Colin Selby and Cade Povich capturing the final two spots in the bullpen.

Quality start sets up ninth win
Suarez (9-7) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Twins. He struck out four.
Impact
Suarez closed out his 2024 campaign with a quality start, allowing a couple of solo homers but limiting the Twins to just three additional baserunners as he held on for his ninth victory of the season. It was a nice bounce back for Suarez who had allowed eight earned runs over his previous two starts spanning 8.2 innings. However, after having allowed just eight home runs through his first 27 appearances (109 IP), Suarez has allowed nine over his last five starts (24.2 IP). The propensity for giving up the long ball will be a concern as the Orioles set their postseason rotation.

Tagged for four runs in loss
Suarez (8-7) took the loss Sunday against Detroit, allowing four earned runs on five hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out six.
Impact
Suarez served up three solo home runs in this one -- two to Kerry Carpenter and a third to Spencer Torkelson. Even after tossing six innings of one-run ball against Boston back on Sep. 10, Suarez has been highly volatile in September. The 34-year-old veteran owns an ugly 7.23 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and a 19:7 K:BB in 18.2 innings this month, ballooning his ERA from 3.14 to 3.74. The right-hander will be difficult to trust in his final start of the season, scheduled for next weekend against the Twins.

Short outing vs. Giants
Suarez (8-6) took the loss Tuesday against San Francisco, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out three.
Impact
Suarez got off to a rough start Tuesday, allowing a first-inning homer to Mike Yastrzemski on his second pitch of the game before the Giants tacked on two more runs in the second. The 34-year-old Suarez came into the day with a 2.43 ERA in his previous seven outings. His ERA now sits at 3.60 with a 1.32 WHIP and 98:41 K:BB across 122.2 innings this season. Suarez will look to get back on track in his next start, currently lined up for this weekend at home against the Tigers.

Cruises to eighth win
Suarez (8-5) earned the win Tuesday at Boston, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out eight.
Impact
After a poor six-run outing in his last start against the White Sox on Sept. 4, the 34-year-old stymied the Red Sox, generating an incredible 21 whiffs en route to his eight Ks. Despite having three of the four hits he allowed go for doubles, Suarez managed to collect his sixth quality start, marking his fourth in his last six starts. Overall, the veteran right-hander has now pitched to a 3.39 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB across 119.1 innings this season. He is line to make his next appearance against the Giants at home next week.

Falls to White Sox
Suarez (7-5) took the loss Wednesday against the White Sox, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two.
Impact
It was a tough night for Suarez in what looked to be an enticing matchup against the White Sox. The right-hander allowed a season-high three homers, including a pair in the fourth inning. The 34-year-old Suarez had been cruising coming into Wednesday's start, allowing just four runs over 30.1 innings in his last five outings. His ERA now sits at 3.49 on the season with a 1.31 WHIP and 87:37 K:BB across 113.1 innings. Suarez will look to bounce back in his next start, currently scheduled for next week on the road in Boston.

Sharp in seventh win
Suarez (7-4) picked up the win Friday, giving up two runs on eight hits over seven innings in a 5-3 victory over the Rockies. He struck out four without walking a batter.
Impact
The 34-year-old right-hander wasn't fazed by a trip to Coors Field, tossing 66 of 95 pitches for strikes en route to his fifth quality start of the season, and third in his last four trips to the mound. Suarez has been impressive since returning to the rotation, posting a 1.97 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB through 32 innings in August, and the Orioles could well keep him in that role even after Zach Eflin (shoulder) and Grayson Rodriguez (lat) get healthy. Suarez is scheduled to make his next start at home next week against the woeful White Sox.

Allows two homers in no-decision
Suarez did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-2 win against the Astros, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts across 5.2 innings.
Impact
Suarez was pulled an out shy of a quality start after surrendering his second solo homer of the game in the sixth inning. A leadoff blast by Jose Altuve in the first broke the 34-year-old's streak of 17.2 scoreless frames since joining the rotation Aug. 6, and he has now exceeded 90 pitches in three consecutive outings. On the year, he owns a 3.18 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 81:35 K:BB across 102 innings and lines up for a road matchup at Coors Field next week.

Earns win with six scoreless
Suarez (6-4) pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday against Boston, allowing seven hits and zero walks while striking out six.
Impact
Suarez was excellent Sunday, scattering seven hits (all singles) to notch his fourth quality start of the season. Suarez has been excellent since filling Grayson Rodriguez's (lat) spot in the rotation on August 6, firing 17.2 scoreless innings in three starts. The 34-year-old now sports a 3.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 78:33 K:BB in 96.1 innings (17 starts) this season. He is tentatively scheduled to face the Astros next weekend.

Now expected to start Sunday
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Friday that Suarez is likely to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Impact
Cade Povich will slide into Suarez's initial spot Saturday for a spot start, giving Suarez and the rest of the members of the Orioles' rotation some extra rest. Hyde said that he does not plan at this time to move to a six-man rotation. Suarez could eventually shift to the Baltimore bullpen, but that won't happen just yet.

ROTOWIRE
No longer starting Saturday
Suarez is no longer scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun reports.
Impact
The responsibility will instead fall to Cade Povich, who will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Suarez has been terrific since re-entering the rotation in place of the injured Grayson Rodriguez (lat), tossing 11.2 scoreless innings with an 11:3 K:BB. It's not clear whether Suarez will simply be pushed back or is being moved to relief, which is his likely role in the postseason for the Orioles.

ROTOWIRE
Keeps dealing
Suarez didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Tampa Bay, allowing four hits and one walk with five strikeouts across 6.2 scoreless innings.
Impact
Suarez has been outstanding since taking Grayson Rodriguez's (lat) spot in the rotation, delivering back-to-back scoreless starts with an 11:3 K:BB during that span. With Rodriguez not expected to return until September, Suarez looks to be locked in for several starts. However, fantasy managers should proceed with caution considering the 34-year-old gave up three or more runs in five of eight starts prior to the scoreless outings and has a 72:33 K:BB on the year. Suarez is tentatively scheduled to face the Red Sox next.

ROTOWIRE
Confirmed to start Sunday
Suarez is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Impact
As expected, Suarez will wind up getting a second straight turn through the rotation after Grayson Rodriguez was diagnosed with a lat strain earlier this week and placed on the 15-day injured list. While the Orioles are optimistic about Rodriguez avoiding a long-term absence, Suarez should be in line for additional starts beyond Sunday. Before losing his spot in the rotation with the Orioles' July 30 acquisition of Trevor Rogers, Suarez had turned in a 6.40 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over his last seven starts, but he bounced back nicely in his return to a starting role Tuesday. Though he took a no-decision in the Orioles' 5-2 loss to the Blue Jays, Suarez struck out six and allowed just four baserunners over five scoreless frames.
