Not starting QB for Week 1 Helton will not be Georgia Southern's starting quarterback for Week 1, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.

Impact During the spring, Georgia Southern's quarterback competition included both Helton and Max Johnson, who will be QB1. So for another season, the former will log backup duty. Having served that role in 2025, Helton did not get much of a chance to shine, having attempted 26 passes for just 74 yards and one touchdown in his backup stead. For better numbers this year, Helton would have to hope for an opening or for Johnson's production to slip.

Benched during bowl game Helton was 3-for-4 passing for 15 yards and one interception during Monday's 38-35 overtime win against Old Dominion.

Impact After a carry for -17 yards, a fumble and an interception, Helton was benched for Caden Veltkamp. The good news for Helton is that he has plenty of offseason time to improve and let people forget about his bowl performance. But with Veltkamp electing to stay at Western Kentucky, Helton also staying may not assure him a starting position when the team plays football again in 2024.
