Clemson receiver Tristan Smith granted temporary injunction for 5th season by South Carolina judge

Clemson wide receiver Tristan Smith was granted a temporary injunction by a South Carolina judge that prevents the NCAA from ruling him ineligible for the 2026 season

JUNE 12 • Associated Press

Eligible for 2026 season Smith (ankle) is eligible for Clemson's 2026 season, Andrea Adelson of ESPN.com reports.

Impact A court judge has granted Smith a temporary injunction, which allows his eligibility for Clemson's 2026 season. Now that the wide receiver is eligible, his focus shifts to a full recovery from an ankle injury that rendered him out for much of spring. In 2025, Smith logged 24 receptions (on 39 targets) for 239 yards and one touchdown, acclimating well to his challenging move from non-FBS college Southeast Missouri State.

Out for spring game, ankle injured Smith (ankle) is out for Clemson's spring game, Jon Blau of The Charleston Post and Courier reports.

Impact Smith being out for Clemson's spring game should not be so surprising, considering it was announced earlier in March that he would undergo surgery for a leg-related injury. The exact problem involves his ankle, and it is unknown when his post-procedure will be.

MARCH 28 • ROTOWIRE

Will undergo surgery Smith (leg) will undergo surgery on Tuesday, Chapel Fowler of The Columbia State reports.

Impact Smith recently posted a picture of himself using a scooter for his right leg, so it appears that is what will cause him to undergo surgery Tuesday. It is a new setback for the wide receiver, who temporarily dealt with an eligibility problem going into Clemson's spring practice. Considering the magnitude of Smith's leg problem and the long time before his 2026 season is set to begin, it would not be surprising if he is out until the summer, though that has not been confirmed.

Can participate in spring practice Head coach Dabo Swinney indicated Wednesday that Smith can participate during 2026 spring practice, Chapel Fowler of The Columbia State reports.

Impact Smith will be given the opportunity to practice with the team as he waits on his NCAA eligibility court case to sort out. The team is not expected to have a clear answer until the summer, but in the meantime, the senior wide receiver can be a part of team activities. The 6-foot-5 pass-catcher closed out the 202 season with 24 receptions for 239 yards and one touchdown.

Announced as starter Smith is part of the Tigers' starting lineup for their upcoming game Saturday against Duke, Jon Blau of The Charleston Post and Courier reports.

Impact For the remainder of 2025, Clemson's receiver corps will be without Bryant Wesco (neck), meaning the Tigers must replace one of their top starters with someone else. In steps Smith, coming off a season-best game Week 8 against SMU. The matchup saw Smith log three receptions (on four targets) for 51 yards and one touchdown. While most of Cade Klubnik's passes will likely go to Antonio Williams and T.J. Moore, their newly promoted teammate does possess significantly increased upside going into November.
