Joining FCS ranks McClain will transfer to FCS Bethune-Cookman, he announced via his personal X account.

Impact McClain has bounced around the past three seasons from South Florida to Central Florida to Arkansas State, and he'll now play for his fourth program in as many years. He's thrown for 3,116 career yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with six rushing scores and 381 rushing yards as well. He'll have one year of eligibility remaining.

Impact McClain saw limited action this season, appearing in four games and tossing for 163 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while completing 66.7 percent of his passes. The former UCF Knight should have one season of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Another relief appearance McClain was 4-for-7 passing for 50 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 52-7 defeat versus Iowa State. He also had 11 rushes for seven yards.

Impact For a second straight week, McClain replaced Jaylen Raynor under center, taking over for the final drive of the first half after Raynor threw a second interception. McClain looked good in Week 3 against Michigan and outperformed Raynor on Saturday, accounting for Arkansas State's lone score. It wouldn't be surprising to see McClain draw the start coming out of the team's Week 5 bye, but the Red Wolves could try to stick it out with Raynor, who was outstanding as a freshman in 2023.

Impact McClain took over for Jaylen Raynor in the fourth quarter with Arkansas State trailing 28-3 and led back-to-back touchdown drives to close out the contest. While Raynor didn't perform well prior to the QB change, it's possible Raynor's benching was due to the lopsided score. Regardless, McClain's excellent play against a ranked opponent may give the Red Wolves coaching staff something to think about at the quarterback position ahead of a road game against Iowa State in Week 4.

Enters transfer portal McClain has entered the transfer portal after being named QB2 Monday, Will Turner of 247Sports.com reports.

Impact Just hours after USF named Gerry Bohanon their starting quarterback for the 2022 season, McClain entered the transfer portal. McClain was the starter for the Bulls in 2021 and totaled 145 completions for 1,888 yards and five touchdowns, but his experience was lacking as compared to Bohanon. The sophomore is almost certainly looking for a school where he will be immediately guaranteed a starting quarterback role.

Impact McClain started all but one game for USF last season but has officially lost his QB1 position to Baylor transfer Gerry Bohanon. Both players have only started one full season, but McClain is a sophomore while Bohanon is a senior coming from a more competitive program, and this experience may have given him the edge. McClain will certainly be a viable option at backup, as he thew 145 completions with 1,888 yards and five touchdowns in 2021.

Splitting reps with first team Coach Jeff Scott said McClain is splitting first-team quarterback reps this spring but wouldn't call it "50-50," Will Turner of 247Sports.com reports.

Impact McClain is splitting spring quarterback reps with sophomore Katravis Marsh after starting under center for the majority of the 2021 season. McClain was shaky for much of last season, passing for five touchdowns to seven interceptions on 55.3 percent completion to go along with 123 rushing attempts for 238 yards and four touchdowns. The freshman does appear to be the first quarterback under center in practice, but Scott also re-emphasized that he would not officially announce the team's starting quarterback until the first week of the 2022 season.
