Impact After three seasons with Kansas, Gardner is on the move, committing to SMU. The running back appeared in just three games last season, gaining 56 yards on 29 carries. Gardner saw his snap count dwindle last season, after Devin Neal and Amauri Pesek-Hickson seemed to have taken over his carries.

Impact Stone appears to still be in the mix to win the starting job as a redshirt freshman despite Tanner Mordecai's impressive 2021 campaign under center. The fact that Mordecai has just one season left and Stone as plenty more ahead may work against Stone, but he appears set to get a look in fall camp before a final decision is made.

Tanner Mordecai - Headed for competition in fall camp Mordecai will compete with Preston Stone over the summer and into fall camp before a starting quarterback will be decided, Billy Embody of On3.com reports.
Impact Mordecai posted an impressive 2021 campaign under center for the Mustangs, completing 67.8 percent of his 454 pass attempts for 3,628 yards and a 39:12 TD:INT ratio. That would normally buy you some security, but it appears Stone is also putting on a show, making the decision a difficult one. If Mordecai loses out, to Stone, it wouldn't be shocking to see him enter the transfer portal.

Impact This is a major pickup for the Mustangs as Wheaton was considered one of the best running backs in the 2021 recruiting cycle. He redshirted at Alabama and is now primed to contribute in the SMU backfield once he arrives on campus. With Ulysses Bentley gone, there is a significant amount of carries up for grabs in this backfield and Wheaton may be the most talented of the group.
