Impact Well this is surprising. Last season, Smith was the focal point of Sam Houston's offense. He had over 750 yards and six touchdowns through the air, but also over 100 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. This season, though, he came into this game with 31 touches and 230 yards total.

However, the wideout may not play, especially with an 18-game respite SHSU's team is scheduled to have after Louisiana Tech. Perhaps the team will prefer resting Smith to have him available for the longer run.

Impact The Bearkats have pivoted to a run-heavy offense, and it's working. Smith was one of two receivers for SHSU who had more carries than catches, and last season Smith ran 27 times for 102 yards and two scores.

Impact Last season, as Sam Houston made the move from the FCS to the FBS, Smith was about the only offensive bright spot. He had 79 catches for 783 yards and six touchdowns, while adding two rushing scores. To opener 2024, the Bearkats actually looked good offensively, but strikingly Smith wasn't part of it. He was only targeted three times as well, which is a bit of a concern.
