Commits to Texas State Yarnell has committed to Texas State, Sam Khan Jr. of The Athletic reports.

Impact Now that Yarnell has committed to a non-Pittsburgh college, he is expected to sit out the 2024 GameAbove Sports Bowl between Pitt and Toledo. This year, redshirt senior Jordan McCloud was Texas State's primary quarterback. Yarnell is capable of being a QB1, having averaged 323 passing yards and two touchdowns as the 2024 Panthers' leading man under center. The current question is whether or not he can outlast other QB newcomers and impress over Brad Jackson, who logged more TDs than his new teammate this year.

Impact Yarnell logged somewhat of a breakout season during 2024, his first year with at least 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns at the quarterback position. As for Pittsburgh, his portal entry leaves a clear path for Eli Holstein (ankle) to be the Panthers' starting QB for their bowl game.

Impact Yarnell was announced as Pittsburgh's starter just before its game against Boston College, and while it was a tough loss for the Panthers, Yarnell played admirably. Though he struggled with efficiency (54.8 percent completion), the quarterback moved the ball through the air at a respectable clip. Though it had a late-season tailspin, Pitt will be eligible for a bowl game, although it remains to be seen if Yarnell of Eli Holstein will start that game.

Impact Yarnell will start in place of Eli Holstein (ankle) after the latter was knocked out of Pittsburgh's game against Louisville last week. Yarnell has been a mixed bag this season, and in relief of Holstein last week he had a rough showing, tossing for 96 yards, one touchdown and one interception while completing 47.8 percent of his passes.

Impact Yarnell came off the bench for Eli Holstein after the redshirt freshman was knocked out of the game early, and didn't perform all that admirably. After playing well against Clemson in relief of Holstein last week (350 yards, 63 percent completion), Yarnell looked overwhelmed against Louisville. Holstein's injury reportedly isn't season-ending, although there's only one game remaining this regular season. Thus, it's unclear who will start under center for the Panthers in Week 14.

Impact Yarnell didn't represent much of a downgrade from injured starting quarterback Eli Holstein, especially given the latter's struggles as of late. He nearly led Pittsburgh to the upset win if it wasn't for the defense completely breaking down on Clemson's go-ahead scoring drive. Holstein's status remains unclear for Saturday against Louisville, but Yarnell looks like a very capable replacement.
