Kam Thomas News, Rumors, Updates - UTEP Miners

Leading receiver in defeat Thomas gathered in 4 of 8 targets for 96 yards during Saturday's 24-11 loss to San Jose State.

Impact Thomas would finish the day as UTEP's leading receiver, largely thanks to his 64-yard grab on the first play from scrimmage. Thomas, a redshirt senior, has seen his volume tick up of late -- he's been targeted 17 times in his last two contests after totaling just six receptions on 10 targets for 142 yards in his first five games this year.

Touchdown in win Thomas gathered in 2 of 4 targets for 92 yards and a touchdown during Saturday's 51-10 victory against Texas Southern.

Impact Thomas didn't log a carry Saturday but he made a quick impact as a receiver, as he broke free for an 83-yard touchdown reception on UTEP's first offensive play from scrimmage. Thomas missed all but one game last season with a knee injury, but he totaled 47 receptions for 532 yards and two touchdowns in 2024.

Healthy for camp Thomas (knee) is healthy for fall camp, according to Bret Bloomquist of El Paso Times.

Impact Thomas was widely expected to be 100 percent healthy for training camp before the start of the season, and the star RB will be able to get ready for the campaign with no limitations after leaving his knee issues behind. Thomas had 13 carries for 36 yards last season, as well as four catches for 26 yards, but he played just one game. If he stays healthy throughout the 2026 season, he has amazing potential.

Should be 100 percent by summer Thomas (knee) should be 100 percent by summer workouts, Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times reports.

Impact Thomas is expected to enter fall camp healthy, which should allow him to begin the 2026 season in that status as well. He suffered a knee injury early in the 2025 campaign, and the problem has not resolved itself despite more than half a year having passed since the issue first occurred.

Ramping up, not quite 100 percent Thomas (knee) is ramping up his recovery from his knee ailment but still isn't at a full 100 percent, per KTSM 9 News.

Impact Thomas had 13 carries for 36 yards last season, as well as four catches for 26 yards. The versatile, all-purpose back, who's listed at "Miner Back" on UTSA's roster, is working his way back from his knee ailment but isn't quite 100 percent. However, he's certainly trending towards being fully healthy for the Miners' opener at Oklahoma.

APRIL 21 • ROTOWIRE

Out for season Thomas (knee) will miss the rest of the 2025 season, according to Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times.

Impact Thomas hasn't played since the Miners' opener, and now it's been confirmed he won't return for the rest of the campaign. Thomas ends the campaign with 16 carries for 36 yards and four catches for 26 receiving yards. Expect Hahsaun Wilson to continue as the lead back for UTEP.

Not playing in Week 2 Thomas (knee) is not playing in the Week 2 matchup against Tennessee-Martin on Saturday, according to Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times.

Impact Thomas practiced Tuesday and Wednesday, but he's believed to be dealing with a knee injury, meaning UTEP will have to shift things in their backfield. Hahsaun Wilson and Ashten Emory are expected to see an uptick in carries with Thomas out.

Is Thomas a RB now? Thomas caught four passes for 26 yards, but also ran 16 times for 36 yards Saturday against Utah State.

Impact This is interesting. Thomas has been a wide receiver, and a pretty good one at that. Last year, after joining his head coach in moving from Austin Peay to UTEP, he had 47 catches for 532 yards in nine games. Thomas would carry the ball occasionally, but in the 2025 season opener he comfortably got the most carries of any Miner. Could he now be the team's lead back?

AUGUST 31, 2025 • ROTOWIRE

Big catch, big punt return Thomas caught four passes for 90 yards versus NMSU on Saturday.

Impact Thomas had missed the prior three games with an injury, but he looked no worse for the wear here. In addition to a 69-yard reception, Thomas returned a punt 93 yards for a score.

Will play for UTEP Thomas (undisclosed) will play against New Mexico State on Saturday, UTEP writer Zay Galindo reports.

Impact Thomas was spotted warming up and has been a full go in recent practices, so this comes as little surprise. The wideout, who has 42 receptions for 422 yards and two touchdowns this season, should resume his role as one of the top pass-catchers on this offense after missing three games.

NOVEMBER 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Spotted warming up Thomas (undisclosed) has been spotted warming up ahead of UTEP's game against New Mexico State, Adrian Broaddus of 600 ESPN El Paso reports.

Impact Thomas was considered probable, as he was a full go in recent practices. The wideout appears ready to go for the Miners against the Aggies. Thomas has 42 grabs for 422 yards and two scores this fall.

NOVEMBER 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Full go in recent practice Thomas (undisclosed) is full go in practice, Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times reports.

Impact Considering that Thomas' injury status was doubtful the last time it was updated, his latest update is incredibly promising. Ideally for him, Saturday at New Mexico State is an opportunity he takes advantage of to finish his 2024 regular season strong.

NOVEMBER 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Doubtful for Kennesaw game Thomas (undisclosed) is doubtful for UTEP's game Saturday against Kennesaw State, Adrian Broaddus of 600 ESPN El Paso reports.

Impact A non-football-related injury is affecting Thomas' availability. Defeating fellow struggling team Kennesaw State will be a lot difficult for UTEP now that one of the team's primary wideouts is expected to sit out, potentially indefinitely.

NOVEMBER 8, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Out for MTSU game Thomas was out for UTEP's 20-13 loss Saturday against Middle Tennessee State, Zay Galindo of 600 ESPN El Paso reports.

Impact An undisclosed problem prevented Thomas' availability Saturday. Without him available, three of UTEP's players (Ashton Nickelberry, Emari White and Jevon Jackson) updated their 2024 bests for targets. Currently, the Miners' next opponent is expected to be Kennesaw State. The two teams are scheduled for a game on Nov. 9.

NOVEMBER 2, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Finds end zone Thomas caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown versus La Tech on Tuesday.

Impact This is Thomas' first touchdown since UTEP's opener, but this fact is paired with a concerning one. Skyler Locklear, the quarterback who threw that touchdown, left this game with an injury. JP Pickles stepped in under center, only attempted two passes, and ran the ball 12 times.

OCTOBER 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Involved in run game Thomas caught five passes for 31 yards and had six carries for 26 yards versus Sam Houston on Thursday.

Impact Thomas is clearly a guy who UTEP's coaches want touching the ball. He's got 31 catches already, and now he has eight carries as well. Thomas also returns kicks and punts. Opportunity is always a big part of success, but fantasy-minded folks will want to see more production.

OCTOBER 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Another six catches Thomas caught six passes for 46 yards versus Colorado State on Saturday.

Impact Thomas is the style of receiver that is valuable to his team, but brings less to the fantasy space. He has 26 catches through four games, which is quite good, but he's a release-valve receiver, not a big-play threat. Thomas has turned those 26 catches into 284 yards, and he has only found the end zone once.

SEPTEMBER 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Another eight catches Thomas caught eight passes for 68 yards versus Liberty on Saturday.

Impact Skyler Locklear is in his first year as a starting quarterback and he clearly has a plan: Throw the ball to Thomas as much as possible. The Austin Peay transfer already has 20 catches through only three games. Don't worry about the 8.5 yards per reception here. Thomas returns punts and kicks, and they don't let you do that if you aren't a dynamic athlete.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Tallies 99 yards receiving Thomas caught five passes for 99 yards versus Southern Utah on Saturday.

Impact So far, Thomas has been the player brought along from Austin Peay who has taken to the FBS the best. Yes, Southern Utah is an FCS opponent, but Thomas has 12 catches for 170 yards and a touchdown and is also a kick and punt returner.

UTEP's Skyler Locklear finds Kam Thomas for an AMAZING 38-yard TD against Nebraska

AUGUST 31, 2024 • FOX SPORTS

Has good day in FBS debut Thomas caught seven passes for 71 yards and a touchdown Saturday versus Nebraska.

Impact Of all the guys who followed Scotty Walden from Austin Peay to UTEP, Thomas had the easiest transition to the FBS level in Week 1. These are good numbers, especially for a game in Lincoln against a Matt Rhule defense. Now, Thomas is only 5'7'', so he's undersized, but he seems like he can handle a slot role in Conference USA.
