Impact Matter struggled the week before against Fresno State (Oct. 12) with 172 passing yards and one interception. With the performance against Hawaii, the redshirt sophomore is having a breakout season with almost 2,500 total yards (1,896 passing yards and 533 rushing yards). Mateer has a good shot padding his stats on Saturday (Oct. 26) against San Diego State. The Aztecs defense is middle of the pack in the country against the pass.

Impact Mateer's streak of back-to-back 300-plus passing games ended against Fresno State. In addition, it was the first game this season the sophomore did not throw a touchdown pass. It's also been a tough couple of weeks in eluding the pressure. Mateer was sacked four times against Fresno State. In the past two weeks the sophomore has been sacked 12 times. Mateer might have a better time running the ball than throwing the ball against Hawaii on Oct. 19. The Rainbow Warriors defense is a bit tougher against the pass than the run.

Impact The 26 completions tied last week's number against San Jose State. He also surpassed 300 passing yards for the third time this season. Mateer struggled rushing the ball. He came in averaging 106 yards on the ground in four games. It didn't help that Boise State did not let Mateer out of the pocket as he was sacked seven times. The junior could have an easier time against Fresno State this Saturday. The Bulldogs' defense is in the middle of the pack in the country against the run and pass.

He might have a tougher time on Sept. 20 against San Jose State whose defense is in the top quarter in the country against both the run and pass. But the Spartans have not faced quality competition while going undefeated 3-0.

Sets WSU Mark for QB Rushing Mateer rumbled 197 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown to set a Washington State quarterback rushing record on Saturday in the Cougars 37-16 win over Texas Tech on Sept. 7.

Impact This mark was one week after the junior collected six touchdowns. The Cougars signal caller only had to complete 9-of-19 pass attempts for 115 yards and a touchdown against Texas Tech including a 21-yard touchdown pass. Mateer will have a much tougher assignment on Saturday (Sept. 14) against Washington in the Apple Cup. The Huskies were in the top 50 last season against the run with 148 yards per game. Mateer might be throwing the ball more against Washington who were near the bottom in the nation against the pass in 2023 allowing 259 yards in the air.

Named starting quarterback Mateer has been named the starting quarterback for Washington State ahead of the 2024 season, according to Greg Woods of The Spokane Spokesman-Review.

Impact Head coach Jake Dickert recently said the starting quarterback would be named after last Saturday's scrimmage, and it seems Mateer has earned the role. There's not much of a surprise here; however, as he was seen as the favorite to secure the QB1 gig over Zevi Eckhaus. Mateer had a supplementary rushing and receiving role in the 2023 season, but the departure of Cam Ward generated a battle for the starting role under center, and Mateer has come away with the job. He's lined up to lead Washington State in the season opener against Portland State on Aug. 31.
