New Mexico Bowl pits No. 23 North Texas against San Diego State

Not too long ago, it appeared Saturday’s New Mexico Bowl, pitting No. 23 North Texas against San Diego State, would be all about quarterback uncertainty

DECEMBER 26, 2025 • Associated Press

Undergoes surgery Denegal underwent left shoulder surgery Wednesday and won't play in the New Mexico Bowl against North Texas on Saturday, Kirk Kenney of The Press-Enterprise.

Impact Denegal suffered the injury in the season opener but played with a protective harness the rest of the way, and he ended up suiting up in every game for the Aztecs in 2025. He completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 1,811 yards while posting a 9:8 TD:INT in 12 outings. This means Bert Emanuel will get the nod under center to face the Mean Green.

Falls in overtime Denegal was 14-for-24 passing for 162 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Friday's 23-17 overtime defeat to New Mexico. He also had seven rushes for eight yards.

Impact It was a step in the right direction for Denegal, who'd thrown for just 98 yards total in his previous two games. Still, the junior quarterback has struggled down the stretch, throwing for fewer than 200 yards in each of his last six contests. Denegal will finish the regular season with a 58.6 completion percentage for 1,811 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions as the Aztecs will now turn their attention towards a bowl matchup.

Inefficient out versus Spartans Denegal completed 8 of 16 passes for 81 yards during Saturday's 25-3 victory over San Jose State. He also had five rushes for negative four yards with one touchdown.

Impact Denegal has now fallen short of 100 yards passing for two weeks in a row, though last week's effort against a typically stingy Boise State defense is a little more forgivable. That said, the Aztecs jumped to a comfortable 18-3 lead at halftime, so the offense was basically in coast mode for much of the second half. Denegal did reach pay dirt via a rushing score, marking his third in the last two games, but he may need to ratchet up his passing prowess next week with New Mexico on the ledger to close out the 2025 regular season.

Quiet during Week 12 Denegal completed 6 of 10 passes for 17 yards during Saturday's 17-7 victory over Boise State. He also had five rushes for 16 yards with two touchdowns.

Impact Except for completion percentage, Denegal logged season worsts in every passing category, with the Aztecs relying on a more reliable run game to carry their team over Boise State. Overall, the quarterback's post-bye struggles remain, evident with his one touchdown and five interceptions across four games since he last rested in Week 8.

Impact Denegal will look to keep his breakout season with San Diego State rolling. This season has seen him log 115 completed passes on 194 pass attempts for 1,551 yards and an 8-7 TD-INT ratio. Denegal has not been much of a rushing quarterback, but he still has one touchdown with his feet.
