Named starting QB Sagapolutele has won California's quarterback competition, per Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.com.

Impact California picks its freshman gunslinger to lead its offense over the Ohio State transfer Devin Brown. This is an intriguing pick as Brown was widely considered the favorite with his three years of experience in Columbus, but the Golden Bears are rolling with the freshman and the upside. He'll get his first shot to prove himself in the opener against Oregon State on August 30.

Competing for starting role? Sagapolutele is part of the competition to start under center for Cal in the 2025 season, according to Matt Moreno of On3.com.

Impact Even though all signs point to Devin Brown running away with the role, Sagapolutele will probably give everything in practice to merit consideration as a reliable backup. Sagapolutele is a freshman and isn't likely to play a big role even if healthy.
