Calls it a career Payoute has taken a medical disqualification and has ended his football career, according to a post on his personal Twitter account.

Impact Payoute entered 2021 believed to be a breakout candidate but never really found his stride on the field. He caught the only pass of his career for 42 yards in the bowl game versus Maryland and will now move on from playing football.

Dressed as expected Payoute is in uniform for the opener Friday against North Carolina as expected, Michael Niziolek of The Roanoke Times reports.

Impact Payoute isn't listed as a starter for the Hokies but should be involved in the rotation as the coaching staff aims to manage him a bit to keep him healthy. The redshirt freshman is believed by many in Blacksburg to be a breakout candidate, so he may be one to keep an eye on.

Impact Payoute is a potential X-factor for the Hokies this fall, but being able to stay healthy has been a challenge for him thus far at Virginia Tech. All signs point to him being healthy going into the season and he could enter the rotation for targets alongside Tre Turner, Tayvion Robinson and James Mitchell.

Impact Payoute is not game ready yet, but thankfully there are still a few weeks to go before the Hokies begin the season on Sept. 3 against North Carolina. The unfortunate part of this is that Payoute is hoping to break in as a starter at WR this season and missing practice reps hurts those chances at least for the early part of the season.

Impact Payoute minimally impacted the Hokies' offense in 2019, failing to record a stat while appearing in only one game. A four-star receiver, Payoute has the pedigree of a wideout who could contribute early in his career, so he may be one to look out for if the redshirt freshman can keep the positives rolling during camp.
