The spirit of Saint Louis: how a lack of ego is fueling the 24th-ranked Billikens

No. 24 Saint Louis is using a selfless approach to one of the best starts in program history

Dion Brown - Key addition for Billikens Brown racked up 14 points (6-11 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT), six rebounds and two assists over 25 minutes during Tuesday's 81-77 win over Duquesne.
Impact Brown's senior season at Saint Louis -- his third collegiate program -- has been largely successful through 19 games. He's started each of those contest for the 18-1 Billikens, while serving as the leading rebounder (6.1 rpg) and second-leading scorer (11.6 ppg) in the team's deep and balanced rotation. Brown has essentially improved across the board compared to last season at Boston College, especially in terms of efficiency, going from 44.4 to 62.8 percent from the field. He's helped his team to a spot in the AP Top-25 poll with aspirations for an at-large bid come March.

Robbie Avila - Focal point of successful year Avila supplied 14 points (5-7 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), five rebounds, six assists and one steal across 30 minutes during Tuesday's 81-77 win over Duquesne.
Impact Avila's playing time has taken nearly a 9.0 mpg hit in Josh Schertz's second year at the helm at Saint Louis, but it's hard to argue with the team success, as the Billikens own an 18-1 record and have found their way to the AP Top-25. Part of that success has been due to a deep and balanced rotation. Avila was one of three players with exactly 14 points in the road win Tuesday, and despite the drop in playing time, he leads the team in scoring at 12.8 ppg. Watch out for "Cream Abdul-Jabbar" at the Billikens come March.
