Was it a foul? Samford reacts to 'terrible call' after being denied upset of Kansas

Scores 19 in opening round win Timberlake accumulated 19 points (5-8 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 6-7 FT), two rebounds, three assists and one steal over 26 minutes during Thursday's 93-89 victory over Samford.

Impact Timberlake posted a season-high 19 on 5-for-8 shooting including going 3-for-6 from behind the arc to help the Jayhawks survive their opening round battle with Samford. The Bulldogs had cut the lead to one with Timberlake driving to the hoop, and while it appeared that a clean play had been made on the block attempt, a foul was and Timberlake was able to drain both free-throws to put the Jayhawks up three with 14 seconds remaining. Timberlake has seen the largest boost while teammate Kevin McCullar has been forced to miss game action and with McCullar, the team's leading scorer, now ruled out for the entirety of the tournament, Timberlake will continue to be heavily relied upon.

Picking up McCullar's minutes Timberlake ended Saturday's 86-67 win over Texas with 13 points (3-6 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 6-8 FT), three rebounds, two assists and one steal in 33 minutes.

Impact Timberlake has now started three games this year, each in place of Kevin McCullar, who is currently considered week-to-week with a knee injury and may even miss the rest of the season. In those three games started, Timberlake has put up eight, 13 and 13 points. There's no secret Timberlake hasn't had much of an impact for the Jayhawks this year after averaging 17.7 ppg last season at Towson, but the sixth-year player at least appears to have an opportunity to correct course on the horizon, even if he has massive shoes to fill. He could be a late-season add for fantasy managers in need of scoring and three-point shooting.

Impact While it was Elmarko Jackson that picked up the start with Kevin McCullar (knee) sidelined, Timberlake was elevated to the role of sixth-man in the lopsided victory, leading the Jayhawks in bench minutes. Individually, he picked up a season-best rebounding total, and matched his previous best with two assists and two steals. Three-point shooting was a big strength of Timberlake's at Towson, as he knocked down 2.8 threes per game in his fifth year at Towson, converting at a rate of 41.6 percent. Both numbers have taken a nose dive at Kansas, however, as he's now only attempting 2.5 per contest with a woeful success rate of 26.9 percent.

Inconsistent playing time Timberlake is averaging 4.0 ppg across 13.2 minutes in six games to begin the 2023-24 season.

Impact It was once thought that Timberlake's experience and outside shooting ability would allow him to push four-star freshman Elmarko Jackson for playing time, but that hasn't been the case so far this season. So far, the sixth-year senior has shot just 4-for-15 from distance and 33.3 percent from the field overall, and that showing culminated in a season-low three minutes last Wednesday against Tennessee in the Maui Invitational third-place game. He did log double-digit minutes in the season opener, knocking down a trio of three-pointers en route to 13 points -- a mark that still stands as his season high. Since then, Timberlake has yet to score more than five points in a game. The Jayhawks certainly need more outside shooting and will hope he can regain his form from Towson, where Timberlake had produced back-to-back years with at least 78 threes made, shooting greater than 40 percent from distance in each.

Impact Timberlake was thought to be the favorite to start at shooting guard this season for Kansas, but freshman Elmarko Jackson took that honor on Sunday and played 26 minutes to Timberlake's 17 minutes. Timberlake did have a 0 +/-, while Jackson was -13. Kansas really needs some more outside shooting and Timberlake is arguably their best option for that, so expect him to play a decent role this season whether he starts or not. The Jayhawks open the regular season on Nov. 6 against North Carolina Central.

Scoring-wise, Timberlake was his best during Towson's latest season. The guard averaged 17.7 points on a 59.8 true shooting percentage across 33 games.
