Impact Smith will join the Fighting Irish following a single season with Gonzaga. The 6-foot guard averaged 5.1 points and 3.6 assists per game across 35 contests for the Bulldogs this past season. Th e former Colgate transfer will retain a single year of eligibility with Notre Dame.

Impact Smith was held scoreless in just seven minutes of action last Saturday, and not only was he pulled from the starting lineup here, but his two minutes played were the junior guard's lowest total of the season. It's not the first time Smith has been benched this season in favor of freshman Mario Saint-Supery, as Smith came off the bench for a stretch of nine games in a row that started in mid-November, but he regained his starting status prior to the end of the calendar year. It may be too late to repeat that effort with the Zags gearing up for postseason play, and Saint-Supery's solid play of late.

Impact Smith had been coming off the bench for Gonzaga over the last nine games, as it seemed he had conceded the starting point guard role to freshman Mario Saint-Supery. Smith did recently make a good case for more playing time, however, as he scored a season-high 21 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting a week earlier in a win at Oregon. He then followed that up with Sunday's tremendous effort, needing just 17 minutes to record his second-highest assist total of the year. Saint-Supery appeared off the bench in this one, scoring five points across 18 minutes and adding four assists. It's unclear if the tides have shifted in favor of the more experienced Smith, but Tuesday's matchup at San Diego should provide a better indication.

Impact Smith started the first four games of the season for Gonzaga, and while there were bright spots -- such nine assists against Arizona State on Nov. 14 -- he never offered much from a scoring standpoint. Through those four starts, he averaged just 3.0 ppg on 31.3 percent shooting, and was dreadful from distance, going 1-for-9. Freshman Mario Saint-Supery took over in the starting five Nov. 17 against Southern Utah, where he racked up 16 points, seven assists and six steals. The competition was much tougher for Saint-Supery Monday against Alabama, but he managed 10 points, six assists and five rebounds. Meanwhile, Smith was held scoreless in just eight minutes off the bench. Smith was a double-digit scorer both seasons at Colgate, but it appears he'll be relegated to a depth role now that he's with what appears to be a top-10 program nationally.
