MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid captain Jorge “Koke” Resurrección will not play in the Champions League game against Manchester United on Tuesday after his mother died.
Atletico said Koke’s mother, Ana Merodio Borja, died early Tuesday in Madrid. It did not provide a cause of death.
Atletico added UEFA authorized a moment of silence before the game at Metropolitano Stadium, and its players will wear black armbands.
A moment of silence will also be observed ahead of Atletico's Youth League match. Koke's brother, Borja Resurrección, is an assistant coach of Atletico's under-19 squad.
The club's flag outside the Metropolitano is flying at half-staff.
