After receiving a walkover in her previous match, Birrell continued her surprising run into the semifinals of this WTA 500 event with a marathon three-set win over the No. 37-ranked Romanian that spanned three hours and five minutes. The 27-year-old Australian is clearly playing above her current ranking of No. 107 in the world.
