WWE No Mercy 2016: 3 Bold Predictions
WWE No Mercy 2016 has a few interesting matchups and storyline, but here are three bold predictions for this Sunday’s pay-per-view.
It’s been awhile since we saw a WWE No Mercy pay-per-view. The last installment was back in 2008 when the main event was Chris Jericho defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Shawn Michaels in a ladder match. But this year’s WWE No Mercy is taking place in a different era of professional wrestling.
No Mercy was an event that wasn’t quite at par with events like Survivor Series, the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania. It was enough to be the namesake of arguably the greatest professional wrestling video game from the 64-bit era. While WWE No Mercy 2016 might seem like a filler pay-per-view before Survivor Series in November, there are some intriguing matchups on the card.
There is a lot of talk surrounding the WWE World Championship triple threat match between AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose and John Cena. There’s also some who feel that The Miz and Dolph Ziggler should be a main event match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Someone (Ziggler) putting his career on the line for a title match tends to create that kind of buzz within the WWE Universe.
Outside of those two matches, there are a few singles matches including Becky Lynch (WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion) and the team of Heath Slater and Rhyno (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions) defending their titles. Add a few singles matches and you have a card that may or may not be a decent SmackDown-only pay-per-view.
Whether it becomes the best or worst pay-per-view since the WWE brand extension, here are three bold predictions for WWE No Mercy 2016.
3. Bray Wyatt Defeats Randy Orton
Speaking of someone who feels undervalued and underused, Bray Wyatt is someone who should have some signature wins under his belt. He’s been a great heel that the fans consider an entertaining part of SmackDown Live. However, his feud with Randy Orton seems like a waste of time. Orton doesn’t need to have a victory over someone like Wyatt. At least not in the same way that Wyatt needs the win over the Viper.
By technicality, Wyatt does have a win over Orton via forfeit. But it was a short-lived celebration as Wyatt quickly lost to Kane. Similar to Ziggler, the WWE has usually destroyed any momentum Wyatt’s character gains. WWE No Mercy provides the perfect opportunity to turn that ship around and provide a surprising result in the process.
A win for Wyatt would actually allow for the WWE Universe to begin taking his message seriously. Another loss would just further impact the fans perspective of Wyatt as a threat. The WWE should be recognizing that and allow for Wyatt to get a much-needed pinfall to officially go over Orton in their feud.
Let’s not forget the potential wild card in Sister Abigail. There’s a good chance the ominous segment from Tuesday’s SmackDown could lead into a big change that helps give Wyatt a boost.
2. Dolph Ziggler Will Lose; Leave WWE
Dolph Ziggler has not received the greatest treatment that someone of his talent should receive. 2016 has not been kind to the Showoff, as he’s only had one pay-per-view win. That was back in May when he pinned Baron Corbin at Payback. We all want to believe that Ziggler is going to be able to pull off the victory over The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship.
One would like to think that the his career being on the line is being used to help get the fans to root for Ziggler more at No Mercy. While it would be a nice fairytale ending, the reality is that Ziggler probably doesn’t want to be in the WWE much longer. This will lead to him losing at WWE No Mercy to The Miz and thus ending his career.
He has been doing a lot with stand-up comedy and someone with his talent would certainly find work in Hollywood. Ziggler has been held down in the WWE. Every time he gets some momentum – i.e. Survivor Series 2014 – it gets killed quicker than your favorite character in Game of Thrones. Ziggler’s WWE career will end like Jon Snow’s first run in GoT.
Unlike Snow, Ziggler won’t be brought back by the WWE writers. Nor will Ziggler probably want to come back. He would earn more respect wrestling for another company.
3. Triple Threat Sets Up Ambrose’s Heel Turn
The beauty of a triple threat match for any kind of championship is that there are several different ways for it to end. We could see John Cena claim his 16th world championship by defeating AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Championship at WWE No Mercy. Or we could see Ambrose reclaim the title.
There will be a lot of chaos, as can be expected with any triple threat match. One thing most fans can agree on is that AJ Styles is likely going to walk out of Sacramento, Calif., the champion. But what could happen this Sunday is Cena doing something that leads to Ambrose being pinned or away from the action when Cena is pinned.
Either way, a great storyline to come out of WWE No Mercy would be Ambrose blaming Cena for him not getting the WWE World Championship back. This would lead into Ambrose becoming enraged to the point he tries to get rid of Cena.
A storyline like this would be great if Ambrose can go into the type of persona we’ve seen during his days on the independent wrestling scene. It’s likely the WWE has taken these things into consideration before WWE No Mercy.
