The WWE’s New Day should make professional wrestling history by breaking Demolition’s record for the longest tag team title reign.
Tag team wrestling is a different beast than a one-on-one competition. There are so many variables that a lengthy championship run of any kind feels more special. The New Day – a trio of Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods – are inching closer to tag team wrestling history. By the time Monday Night Raw airs, the New Day will have been WWE Raw Tag Team Champions for 477 days.
The title run dates back to before the recent brand split and when they were originally the WWE World Tag Team Championship. It’s an impressive feat just to have any championship for more than a year, let alone 477 days. But in recent weeks, the New Day have teased how close they were getting to matching and breaking Demolition’s record reign as WWE World Tag Team Champions.

Ax and Smash first won tag team gold in WWE back at WrestleMania IV in Atlantic City, N.J. They would hold onto the titles for 478 days before losing to Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July 1989. Demolition would win the titles two more times for a combined 698 days – another record for any one tag team.
A win on Raw would guarantee breaking the record that would be met on Tuesday and surpassed as of Wednesday. The New Day has certainly shown to be the best tag team in the modern-day WWE. While it’s still early to put them ahead of Demolition in terms of overall tag team legacy, they are deserving to break the record for longest tag team championship reign.
The following are the three biggest reasons the New Day should break Demolition’s tag title record.

3. Rewarding New Day for Consistent Quality
There’s the old saying that reminds us “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” While we can debate the grammatical abomination of that phrase, we can all agree that there’s some truth to that. The WWE tag team division has been strong, but the New Day has been the main highlight for more than two years.
Yes, championship runs eventually have to end at some point. Nothing good lasts forever. Clichés aside, there really is no big rush to take the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship off of the trio. While the tag team division has improved since they first won the “WWE World Tag Team Championship,” they’ve still succeeded with the long run.
Aside from the entertaining duo of Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady, the New Day have been the best part of Raw week in and week out for two years. They’ve given us so many memorable moments on a consistent basis. Why should the WWE take the titles away from them?
Because of their dependability, breaking Demolition’s record would be almost like a reward for their efforts. In fact, maybe they’ll break another of Demolition’s record for most combined days as tag team champions. That would further solidify how great the New Day has been and still is.
2. Records Are Meant to Be Broken, Once in a While
There’s something special about a record being broken in any sport. Some record might not be possible. It’s hard to image any basketball player in today’s game being able to match or exceed Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game. Just like Bruno Sammartino’s 2,803 days as WWE Champion is extremely unlikely in the modern days of professional wrestling.
Many championship reigns in the last three decades have rarely surpassed a year. The New Day have truly been a special team in the modern-day WWE. They’ve certainly been entertaining enough to be warranted the honor of holding this significant record. It also provides fans with a special moment to witness. Every generation of wrestling fans usually have a top team or singles wrestler to point out.
The New Day have certainly been that tag team. Fans will likely tell them children and grandchildren about Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E in the same fashion as our elders may have taught us about Ax and Smash. That’s one of the reasons why records should be broken. While it shouldn’t happen all of the time, it gives us something different to get excited for.
The recent matches on Raw have felt different because fans know that the record is close. It makes those TV matches that would have otherwise been viewed as “filler” to have some substance.
1. The Next Championship Team Will Benefit Greatly
Whenever a dynasty falls in professional sports, a new one can quickly form. The team that knocks off the giant from the mountain top truly gets a boost from the fans. Someone defeating the New Day will feel like a major upset, similar to the March Madness of College Basketball. The team that eventually becomes the new WWE Raw Tag Team Champions will have a lot of momentum.
It would be a sign that the next title holders are considered a big deal to break the record-setting streak. This would also mean having to pick the right team for the New Day to pass the torch to. It has to be a team that will be just as entertaining and talented inside and out of the wrestling ring.
The perfect candidate would be Enzo and Cass. We had a glimpse of what kind of rivalry they would have during a segment back in June. This would be a perfect matchup for WrestleMania 33 with a few months to build up their championship match. The New Day might be a little over-confident with breaking the record. At the same time, Enzo and Cass would be the hungry up-and-comers poised to win the belts.
A win for Enzo and Cass would feel more special since a record was broken. It also would be a major blow to the New Day’s overall legacy in the WWE tag team division.
