UFC Denver: Donald Cerrone to Fight Jorge Masvidal
UFC Denver has landed a possible co-main event, as Donald Cerrone will get right back on the horse to fight the always game Jorge Masvidal.
Following Donald Cerrone’s vicious head kick knockout of Matt Brown last weekend, he called out any welterweight willing to battle in Denver. Jorge Masvidal responded to those callouts, and shortly after, the fight is reportedly set for January 28.
Masvidal and Cerrone are both finding success as lightweight-to-welterweight converts. Cerrone is sporting an undefeated 4-0 record at 170-pounds, while Masvidal is 3-2 up a weight class and on a two-fight win streak, with the losses coming via split decision.
Donald Cerrone has turned a new leaf in his career since moving to the welterweight division. It’s not like he was unsuccessful at lightweight before, “Cowboy” went on an eight-fight win streak between losses to Rafael dos Anjos from August 2013 to December 2015. Since moving to welterweight, though, Cerrone looks better than ever and has defeated opponents with styles that have given him issues in the past.
Jorge Masvidal comes from the same street fighting background as the late Kimbo Slice and has translated that into great success in MMA. Racking up an 8-4 record since the Strikeforce merger, with three of the losses by split decision, Masvidal has established himself as one of the most entertaining fighters to watch in the sport. Like Cerrone, Masvidal has shown a stylistic shift recently, taking out Jake Ellenberger quickly with a rarely-seen high level of aggression out of the gate at the TUF 24 Finale.
UFC on FOX 23 will take place on January 28 at Denver’s Pepsi Center. Top-ranked women’s bantamweight contenders Julianna Pena and Valentina Shevchenko will face off in the main event, presumably for the next shot at the title.
