'The Fighter and The Kid' break down UFC 194
This week, "The Fighter and The Kid" take a deep look at this weekend's biggest fights and you don't want to miss the analysis and debate! Brendan may usually prefer non-fight related topics on their podcast, but UFC 194's stacked card had him pumped enough to geek out with breakdowns and predictions.
Take, for example, the welterweight contender's bout between Brazilian jiu-jitsu aces Demian Maia and Gunnar Nelson. Schaub is desperately hoping that the two black belts spend most of the match battling on the mat. "To me, as a jiu-jitsu guy, I'm like, 'Hell yeah, let's see this,' " he said.
Brendan worries that Nelson and Maia will fight on the feet, but would be thrilled if it fell to the ground, where both men could shine. "Can we just go down to the ground? Can we just start in 50/50?" he joked.
Brendan made good points about the night's co-main event, and is picking the challenger to win. Luke Rockhold may have his work cut out for him against middleweight champion Chris Weidman, but at least he's prepared after training with great wrestlers Cain Velasquez and Daniel Cormier at AKA, for years.
"He's trained with uber versions of Weidman," he said.
"He's seen the wrestling. He's seen all that. Rockhold is the bigger guy. Where Weidman is good, Rockhold is just as good, if not better. I think on the ground, they're pretty even . . . I just think that style-wise, Rockhold has the answer for Weidman."
In a true testament to how closely matched this fight is, however, Schaub went on to change his pick and predict Weidman would win, in the following episode. In the end, Brendan's gut told him the champ was the right call.
The UFC 194 main event is hard to call for many, but Brendan has a clear-cut prediction. "There comes a time when there's just a changing of the guard. And, the time is now," he said.
"Conor McGregor is going to win this fight and will be the biggest star we've ever seen."
