Verdasco, Kohlschreiber advance

Fernando Verdasco of Spain and Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany reached the second round of the Shanghai Masters with comfortable straight-sets victories on Sunday.
Verdasco beat Go Soeda of Japan 6-2, 6-4 after winning four of his six break points and firing down six aces, setting up a match against seventh-seeded Juan Monaco.
Kohlschreiber, the 16th-seeded player, used a dominant serve to win 6-4, 6-4 against Ryan Harrison of the United States with one break in each set. He will play either Feliciano Lopez or Alejandro Falla in the second round.
Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — the top three seeds — are all competing in Shanghai and have received byes into the second round.
