U.S. Open final live blog, analysis: Kerber, Pliskova enter decisive third set
NEW YORK – Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova will play one more set to determine the 2016 U.S. Open champion. Kerber, the No. 2 seed, took the opening set 6–3, but No. 10–seeded Pliskova rebounded by winning the second set 6–4.
Kerber, who will supplant Serena Williams as the World No. 1 on Monday, is coming off a win over Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals and reached the final without dropping a set. Pliskova, who is riding a 12-match win streak dating back to the Western & Southern Open in early August, stunned top-seeded Serena Williams as well as Venus Williams on her way to her first Grand Slam final. Kerber is playing in her third major final of the year and seeks her second Grand Slam title of the season, and she holds a 4-3 head-to-head advantage over her opponent. But Pliskova won their most recent meeting, just a few weeks ago in the final in Cincinnati, where Kerber had a chance to take the No. 1 ranking from Serena but faltered, losing to the 24-year-old Czech 6-3, 6-1.
