Apparently, Brooke Shields has had it with books about divorce. So she took to a different medium this week to clear the air on her former celebrity marriage.
Shields was married to tennis star Andre Agassi from 1997-99, the two filing for divorce just days before their second anniversary. The belief at the time (thanks in large part to their joint statement) was the two parted ways amicably.
Then Agassi wrote this in his autobiography "Open" in 2009:
"I have a thought no man should have on his wedding day... I wish I had a decoy groom to take my place."
On Wednesday, the 48-year-old Shields (like Agassi, now remarried and the parent of two children) co-hosted "The Today Show" and opened up on the segment "Dealing With Divorce: How to Move On" — a segment which included author Laura Wasser, who was promoting her own divorce guidebook.
"I am divorced," Shields said on the show. "And mine was very quick and relatively easy but it's a very interesting thing because he — quote, unquote — did say to me, 'Be happy that we don't have children or I would not have made this easy for you.'"
Then after a pause and a chuckle, she added "And therein lies why I'm not there anymore."
Talk about a backhand winner.
