Murray begins Valencia Open defense with win

Published Nov. 2, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

Andy Murray began his Valencia Open defense with a 6-3, 7-6 (1) win over Feliciano Lopez on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Murray broke Lopez in the fourth game on his way to taking the first set. He had to rally from a 4-1 deficit in the second after the Spaniard broke him in the fourth game.

Murray took advantage of one of Lopez's many unforced errors to break back and force a tiebreaker, when Lopez managed only one point.

Earlier, two-time Valencia winner Nicolas Almagro had an early exit, losing to Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Juan Ignacio Chela beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
