CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Madison Keys stay at the Volvo Cars Open was much shorter this year, the 2015 American finalist losing her opening match in three sets to Laura Siegemund of Germany on Wednesday.
The eighth-seeded Keys rallied from 5-3 down to win the opening set, but could not overcome Siegemund's steady barrage of drop shots and solid returns in losing 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4. Keys broke Siegemund's serve two straight times to lead 4-3 in the final set before dropping the final three games.
Keys fought off five match points in the final game, including her forehand that appeared long before the chair umpire overruled the call.
