Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber celebrated her 25th birthday Friday with a 6-2, 7-5 win over American teenager Madison Keys in a third-round match at the Australian Open.
The German player broke Keys' serve to love in the 11th game of the second set, helped along by the American player's smash into the net on what could have been an easy winner.
Kerber is the only player in the WTA's top 10 who has not played in a Grand Slam final - her best results so far in a major have been the semifinals at the 2011 U.S. Open and 2012 Wimbledon.
It was Keys' first run to the third round of any major.
