Eighth-seeded Mardy Fish marked the start of his 10th Australian Open with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in a first-round match Monday.

Playing in his 36th major, Fish had an excellent 2011, becoming the highest-ranked U.S. man in April and qualifying for the season-ending ATP Tour final for the first time.

Fish, who lost the Kooyong exhibition final to Australian Bernard Tomic on the weekend, won points on 91 percent of the first serves he got into play Monday and fended off all three Muller break-point opportunities.
