Elena Vesnina of Russia beat fourth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a second-round match.

Eighth-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States, who lost to Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International, advanced to the last eight with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Simona Halep of Romania.
