4 languages not enough for Federer

Published Oct. 14, 2010 1:25 p.m. ET

Roger Federer already speaks four languages, but he sees no reason to stop there.

Federer has traveled to China for the Shanghai Masters without wife Mirka and his one-year-old twin daughters, and the 16-time Grand Slam winner used some of his free time to take a lesson in Mandarin.

''I thought it would be fun,'' Federer said. ''We did it together with the team... I like languages in general. I speak Swiss German, German, French and English fluently. I thought a bit of Mandarin, which I'll never speak anyway, would just be a fun hour for me to learn some.''

Federer admitted he found it ''hard'' but he thought he showed more persistence than his team.

''They gave up after 10 minutes,'' Federer said. ''I was the guy who was saying the words and sentences.''
