WASHINGTON (AP) Chris Wondolowski scored his 12th goal of the season 4 minutes into the game and the San Jose Earthquakes beat Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United 2-0 on Saturday.
Coming off a 5-0 win at Sporting Kansas City, the Earthquakes (10-10-5) grabbed the lead when Fatai Alashe punched a pass to the right side of the goal box and Wondolowski was able to turn on the ball and right-foot a shot into the bottom of the far corner.
Shea Salinas added his second goal of the year in the 52nd minute.
San Jose had a six-game winless streak in July and is clawing its way back into position to claim one of the Western Conference's six playoff sports. United (13-6-8) had won three of its previous four games.
