Wolfsburg are reportedly lining up a bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Mark van Bommel to plug a gap in their midfield.

The Wolves have already been linked with Schalke's Jermaine Jones and Bayern's Anatoliy Tymoschuk and now the Bayern captain is the latest target, according to the Bild newspaper.

"We are always looking for new, tough players, like van Bommel," said Wolfsburg's managing director Dieter Hoeness.

"I would be delighted to have somebody like him in our team."

Van Bommel's contract with Bayern expires next summer and talks over an extension have yet to take place.

Should he not commit to a new deal, January would be the last opportunity for the Bavarians to demand a fee for the 33-year-old, who has registered Wolfsburg's interest, but is not currently thinking about beyond the end of the season.

"Wolfsburg have a good team and of course there is a lot of gossip about transfers right now, but I am not going to get involved in any speculation," he said.
