Western Sydney beats Newcastle in key A-League match
SYDNEY (AP) Spanish midfielder Andreu Guerao converted an 80th-minute penalty and Mitch Nichols added the winner with a 30-yard strike six minutes later to give the Western Sydney Wanderers a 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets on Saturday in Australia's A-League.
Enver Alivodic gave the home side a short-lived 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute. Newcastle, which was taken over by Football Federation Australia earlier this year after its financially-troubled owner placed the team into voluntary liquidation, could have moved into first place with a win.
On Friday, leaders Sydney FC stayed one point ahead of the Brisbane Roar after a scoreless draw. Newcastle sits in third place on nine points, followed by three teams on seven points: Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City and the Wanderers.
Central Coast hosts Wellington to conclude the fifth A-League round on Sunday.
Later Saturday, the Victory beat the Perth Glory 2-0 in the FFA Cup final on goals from Oliver Bozanic and Besart Berisha. The competition features all the A-League teams as well as those from lower tiers in the Australian league system, including from the National Premier Leagues and other state-based leagues.
The Victory became the first A-League team to hold all three domestic titles, having won the premiership and championship double in 2014-15.
The Glory also lost last year's inaugural FFA Cup decider to Adelaide United.
