Victor Valdes time with Manchester United done van Gaal says

BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) Victor Valdes' stint at Manchester United is going to be brief.

United manager Louis van Gaal said Wednesday the club intends on selling Valdes after the former Barcelona and Spanish national team goalkeeper failed to follow the club's philosophy. Valdes was noticeably absent from United's roster for its preseason tour of the United States that opens on Friday night against Mexico's Club America in Seattle.

''He was not selected because he did not follow our philosophy,'' van Gaal said. ''Philosophy is how you play football and how you maintain your match rhythm.''

Van Gaal said at one point last season, Valdes refused to play for United's second-team in a game when he was not getting playing time with the first-team.

''That's one aspect of our philosophy but there are a lot of other aspects. You have to play like a goalkeeper in Manchester United,'' van Gaal said. ''When you are not willing to follow that principle of the philosophy there is only one way and that is out.''

Valdes was signed last January to an 18-month contract as the backup to David de Gea after recovering from a major knee injury. Valdes didn't make his first appearance for United until May 17 when he came on after de Gea was injured against Arsenal. Valdes then started the following week against Hull City.

''I wanted to help him show his qualities for another club,'' van Gaal said of why Valdes started against Hull. ''I'm always a very social human being.''
