USA looks to bounce back in World Cup qualifying in Costa Rica

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The U.S. men's national team is facing the daunting prospect of opening the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying hexagonal with no points from its first two games, but it also has a chance to make history Tuesday night.

The U.S. has never won in Costa Rica and is 0-8-1 there all time in World Cup qualifying, but the two meet in Estadio Nacional in San Jose in the second game of the Hex (9 p.m. ET; beIN Sports, NBC Universo), where Jurgen Klinsmann's side goes in search of that elusive first win

The Americans endured a historic loss of their own Friday in Columbus, Ohio, falling to Mexico there for the first time in a 2-1 defeat. Costa Rica, meanwhile, won at Trinidad and Tobago to start the final round off on the right foot and will look to put the U.S. in a deeper hole on the road to Russia.
