UEFA charges Zenit for fans burning German banner during Dortmund match

NYON, Switzerland -- Zenit St. Petersburg faces further UEFA action after fans burned a German banner at a Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.

UEFA says the charges relate to ''setting off of fireworks and improper conduct of supporters.''

UEFA's disciplinary panel will judge the latest case involving Zenit on May 14.

Potential sanctions would apply next season after Zenit was eliminated Wednesday.

Russian fans were pictured burning a Dortmund banner made from a black, red and gold Germany flag during Zenit's 2-1 win.

Dortmund advanced to the quarterfinals 5-4 on aggregate.

After previous incidents involving Zenit fans, UEFA closed a section of the club's stadium for the home match against Dortmund last month.

That sanction followed fans displaying a racist banner at a group match against Austria Vienna in December.
