Tottenham have held talks with Eredivisie top scorer Vincent Janssen after AZ Alkmaar gave him permission to speak to Spurs, according to reports.

It is understood the 21-year-old spent Tuesday in London listening to Tottenham's plans for the future and discussing a potential deal to move to White Hart Lane.

There has not yet been any discussions between the clubs over a transfer fee, but reports in the Netherlands claim the Eredivisie club are asking for around £12m ($17.5m).

The forward, who was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season with 27 goals, has been of significant interest to Spurs as well as the Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi and Basel's Breel Embolo.

Former Ajax and Holland defender Mario Melchiot told Sky Sports News HQ that Janssen has the ability to play in the Premier League, if he can handle the step up.

"He's scored a lot of goals. He holds the ball up really well, knows where the goal is," he said.

"He's strong enough to play in the Premier League. I don't want to say he's a like-for-like with Harry Kane, because Kane has already shown everyone how to do it.

"Vincent deserves credit for scoring so many goals in Holland but we've seen in the Premier League it won't be a walk in the park for him. Technically, he should be able to compete, so now it's just whether he can handle the pressure and expectation."

Janssen only made his Netherlands debut in March, and has scored three goals in five international appearances, including the equalizer from the penalty spot against England at Wembley.
