Luca Toni has denied he only signed for AS Roma on a six-month loan deal so he could be recalled to the Italian national team for the World Cup.

The 32-year-old striker was presented Saturday in Rome and suggested he wants to move permanently from Bayern Munich, which let him go on a free transfer after he fell out of favor with coach Louis van Gaal.

Toni says he joined Roma for "the affection that everyone showed me" and not "only for the World Cup" but that he will "see what happens in June."

The tournament in South Africa runs from June 11 to July 11.

Toni hasn't featured for the world champions since Italy's disappointing showing at the Confederations Cup last June.

Roma will pay Toni €3.1 million ($4.5 million) plus bonuses.
