Schalke eased into third place in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 win over Nurnberg at the Arena AufSchalke.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar put the Royal Blues on their way to victory in the 13th minute and Raul added a second just before the break.

Huntelaar then made it three midway through the second half before Lewis Holtby completed the rout six minutes from time.

Schalke needed just 13 minutes to go ahead with the in-form Huntelaar netting his 11th goal of the season.

Alexander Baumjohann, who benefited from an injury to captain Benedikt Howedes to earn his place in the starting XI, raced onto Holtby's pass only to see his shot parried by Raphael Schafer.

However, the ball fell kindly to Huntelaar, who scored one of his easiest goals this season.

The same two Schalke players combined in the 26th minute with Baumjohann's cross headed straight into the arms of Schafer by Huntelaar.

Raul almost added a second in the 33rd minute, but Schafer made a good save to deny him.

There was nothing the Nurnberg goalkeeper could do to deny the Spaniard six minutes later, though, as Raul showed his goalscoring instincts to put the home side two up.

Schalke did not seem too interested in building on their lead, though, and sat back inviting Nurnberg to attack them.

However, the Bavarians were unable to create any danger, though, and another counter-attack for the Royal Blues finished them off.

Julian Draxler took the ball forwards after Schalke cleared a Nurnberg corner and he set up Huntelaar, who drilled in his 12th Bundesliga goal of the season.

Holtby added a fourth in the 84th minute as Nurnberg accepted defeat.

The Schalke midfielder dribbled his way through a dejected defence before beating Schafer to round off the comprehensive victory.
