The striker moved to the DW Stadium on a three-and-a-half-year deal from Kilmarnock after Championship side Derby had a deadline day bid rejected, while the player also turned down the chance of joining Scunthorpe earlier in the transfer window. The 24-year-old, who has scored 18 goals this term, including 15 in the SPL, believes he has made the right choice in moving to Wigan and he is looking forward to improving his game under Roberto Martinez. He told the club's official website: "It was a crazy day but as soon as I heard Wigan Athletic were interested in signing me I couldn't wait to get down the road and sign on the dotted line. "It feels amazing to have been given the opportunity to join such a big club and play in the Premier League. "I'm relishing this chance and can't wait to meet the rest of the boys and start working with them and the manager. "I've worked very hard to get this opportunity and I'll continue doing so in order to make my mark on the biggest stage of them all." Sammon added the opportunity of playing under Martinez - who has developed young players such as James McCarthy and James McArthur after their move from Hamilton - was a major reason in his choosing the Latics. He added: "That was a massive factor in my decision. "Playing in the SPL I've obviously paid close attention to the development of players like James McCarthy and James McArthur who have made the same move from Hamilton. "You can see a massive improvement in both players since their move. "I played against them whilst they were at Hamilton and they were a key part of that team who have missed them since. "They're making their mark on the Premier League now which is exciting to see and is a great motivation to put the work in and do the same. "It goes to show the quality the manager has at the club and the reputation the club has for developing young players. "I want to follow in their footsteps and work hard to get that Premier League sharpness." Sammon is convinced he can continue his goalscoring form in the English top flight. He added: "This is a new chapter for me now, a massive opportunity I can't wait to grab with both hands. "I'm confident I can keep scoring goals and do at Premier League level and I'm eager to work as hard as I can to make myself a success here." Martinez believes Sammon has the potential to improve and also has the right attitude to succeed, although he will need time to adapt. The Wigan boss said: "He's desperate to help the team win football games and is a young man with a great future ahead of him. "He brings a goalscoring touch to the team, is very clever with his movement playing on the last-man and has a real threat up-front. "He'll need time to adapt and settle into the football club to become himself, but we feel it's the right move at the right time and we have high hopes of his future here at Wigan Athletic. "We need to be patient with him and we've seen from previous experiences that with these moves it takes time for the player to get up to speed. "But he's eager to get working and his football will tell us when he's ready. "He's a powerful player with the right attitude which should shorten that time."
