Netherlands-born Rini Coolen has begun court action seeking $2.2 million in compensation over his sacking as head coach of Adelaide United in the A-League.

In a case that opened at the South Australia District Court on Monday, Coolen sought a $1.3 million payout for the 3-1/2 years left on his terminated contract.

He also seeks $105,000 for the lost use of a car, $107,000 for the loss of potential bonuses and several hundred thousand dollars in exemplary damages.

Coolen became Adelaide coach in 2010, leading the club to third place after it had finished last the previous year. He signed a new, four-year deal but was replaced as head coach in 2011 when Adelaide won only 2 of its first 11 A-League games.
