Romania football pres. investigated in bribe claim

Romania's anti-corruption prosecutors are investigating the country's football federation president over claims he took a bribe to vote for the 2012 European Championship to be held in Poland and Ukraine.
Mircea Sandu denied the allegations Friday.
UEFA said Thursday it was prepared to take legal action against former Cypriot Football Association official Spyros Marangos, who alleged the championship was corruptly awarded, after he failed to provide evidence.
Romania's Anti-Corruption Department said Friday it was investigating the claims.
Marangos told a German newspaper that UEFA officials sold the tournament rights for ?11 million ($15 million) in 2007.
Eastern European neighbors Poland and Ukraine defeated pre-poll favorite Italy 8-4 in a vote of UEFA executive committee members.
Sandu took part in the April 2007 vote three months after being elected to UEFA's ruling panel.
The 58-year-old Sandu, a former professional player, represented Romanian in 18 matches and scored six goals. He became president of the Romanian federation in 1990.
